This study aimed to analyze influence relationships of shopping motives, information search, and purchase preference for fashion accessory on internet shopping malls, targeting teenage consumers, and to provide the basic data that can be helpful to establishing strategies that can increase purchase preference of internet shopping mall, by discovering differences in purchase characteristics according to demographic characteristics and types of internet shopping mall. It collected data through surveys, which were conducted targeting those teenage consumers who had experiences of purchasing fashion accessory from internet shopping malls. The total of 344 surveys was used as the final analysis data, and the data was analyzed by using the SPSS 18.0 program.
According to the results of this study, first, teenage internet consumers used general and fashion-expert shopping malls the most at the time of purchasing fashion accessories. They visited these shopping malls more than once in two or three months, shopped within three hours, and purchased fashion accessories, spending 30,000 to 100,000 won after searching ten or more products. As purchase informants, they used the past experiences of purchase, specific descriptions of the products, and advice from their friends, seniors, or juniors at school. At the time of purchasing fashion accessories, they considered design, price, color, and size as important.
Second, the shopping motives of teenage internet consumers could be categorized into convenient shopping motive, pleasurable shopping motive, social shopping motive, trendy/individual shopping motive, and practical shopping motive. The information search type was categorized into economical information search, active information search, and recreational information search. Information search consideration properties were categorized into product information search property and service information search property. Lastly, purchase preference was categorized into repurchase preference and internet purchase preference.
Third, as the results of examining the influence that teenage internet consumers’ shopping motives for fashion accessory had on purchase preference, convenient, pleasurable, trendy/individual shopping motives had significant influence on repurchase preference. Pleasurable and convenient shopping motives had significant influences on internet purchase preference, excluding social shopping motive.
Fourth, as the results of analyzing the influence that search information of teenage internet consumers for fashion accessory had on purchase preference, economic, active, and recreational information search types had influence on repurchase preference, and only active information search was the factor influencing internet purchase preference. Also, when examining each property that considered information search, the property of searching product information had influence on repurchase preference, but the properties that considered information search did not have any influence on internet purchase preference.
Fifth, it showed differences in shopping motive, information search, and purchase preference according to the demographic characteristics such as sex, school and grade, monthly average household income, monthly allowance, and starting period of internet shopping, and the types of internet shopping mall. Also, it showed differences of purchase characteristics such as number of visits, number of purchases, shopping time, purchase costs, number of visited web sites, number of searched products, purchased items, range of preferred price, method of payment, and the most used shopping malls.
In conclusion, this study confirmed the influences that teenage internet consumers’ shopping motive and information search had on purchase preference and discovered that demographic characteristics and the most used internet shopping malls of teenage consumers were important variables, which showed differences in purchase characteristics and behavior. Such results can be used as the basic data for establishing strategies that can increase purchase preference by considering consumer characteristics, shopping motive, and information search in the internet fashion accessory market that targets teenage consumers.
