Images on social media are more than simple snapshots; they are representations defined by diverse socio-cultural motivations, reflecting how consumers reconstruct their authentic experiences for a digital audience. This study empirically analyzes the patterns, causes, and consequences of how museum visits are remediated and mediatized through digital platforms.
Modern visitors document their physical experiences through specific visual cues—artworks, spaces, and staged scenes. This phenomenon functions as a "medial reproduction of experience," where internal artistic enjoyment extends into external self-presentation. Through large-scale data analysis, this research seeks to identify how this process works and how it intersects with the drive for social display.
To achieve this, the study analyzed a massive dataset of museum-visit images from Instagram. Using a Python Selenium web crawler, Google Cloud Vision API, and the RAM++ Model, we gathered over 100,000 instances of image and text data. We then conducted a quantitative analysis of object ratios, representation frequencies, and the composition of figures and artworks. Visual elements were classified using AI-based techniques, while text mining methods like Word2Vec extracted user narratives and underlying motivations.
The findings reveal that SNS images of museum visits generally converge into four representative types: person-centered, artwork-centered, space-centered, and social group-centered. Each type exhibits distinct visual components. Notably, "conspicuousness scores" were calculated for approximately 94% of the dataset, suggesting these images are carefully curated to maximize social approval and semiotic significance. Scores were significantly higher in photos featuring people, direct eye contact with the camera, and prominent iconic elements. This points to a "Digital Habitus"—a collective visual grammar shaped by platform algorithms.
These findings empirically support Jean Baudrillard’s discourse on "Simulation," demonstrating that museums are evolving from spaces of pure appreciation into stages for personal branding and the display of cultural capital. However, rather than dismissing this as mere vanity, this study interprets it as a contemporary "performative cultural practice" where art appreciation and conspicuous consumption coexist. By fusing large-scale image and text analysis, this research offers a new theoretical framework for studying museum consumption in the digital age.
