These days, airline companies in Korea adopted a cabin crew team system to mange human resources. A team system, which elevates flexibility of an organization and responds promptly to rapidly changing organizational environment, is indispensible to achieve continuous competitiveness, as an effective team in the service industry is prerequisite to excellent service.
Cabin crew team members work as well as spend time together during overseas stay. Therefore, they commonly forge strong ties and team-work plays a crucial role in working environment. A cabin crew team system introduced to maximize personnel management develops in its scale and size as day by day, putting more importance on the role of a team captain.
In this thesis, based on the assumption that the leadership of a team captain is what influences the most in managing a cabin crew team, a conclusion is drawn through comparison and analysis of how the leadership of a team captain affects duty satisfaction and organization performance. Also, considering the fact that the majority of the cabin crew are female and the recent trend of increasing female captains, how gender difference of a team captain can affect performances is also discussed.
This research was conducted through the survey of cabin crew members of K airline company as of 2013 and the analysis of frequency study, reliability and feasibility analysis, correlation analysis, path analysis, and multi-group analysis using statistics programs such as SPSS 15.0 and AMOS 7.0.
The conclusion of the research can be summarized as the following.
First, all three kinds of leadership, regardless of transformational, servant, and super affect duty satisfaction, and above all, servant leadership is what affects the most to the duty satisfaction of the cabin crew.
Second, duty satisfaction of the cabin crew has a significant influence over the team performance, and a much significant influence over the team commitment.
Third, for female captains, servant leadership and super leadership have significant influences over the duty satisfaction, and for male captains, transformational leadership and super leadership have significant influences over the duty satisfaction.
Fourth, for female captains, the duty satisfaction of the cabin crew has a significant influence on customer evaluation, internal evaluation, self-development, and team commitment. However, for male captains, the duty satisfaction of the cabin crew has a significant influence on customer evaluation, internal evaluation, and team commitment, but not on self-development.
For a business company to survive in a competitive environment, leadership development that can change consciousness of members of organizations is important as it will lead to the increased duty satisfaction of the members, which will contribute to the improved organization performances.
Servant leadership which plays a crucial role as an assistant is an essential leadership to a cabin crew team captain, and super leadership which encourages members to have opportunities to become self-leaders over a captain is the most required leadership considering the work characteristics of the cabin crew as they themselves have to work in various circumstances and deal with unprecedented cases.
The result shows that male captains somewhat lack servant leadership, which can be complemented by strengthening super leadership as it gives positive effects to both male and female on the same level.
This research provides suggestions on leadership of the cabin crew, which requires professionalism, and is expected present a new way to human resources management.
