ABSTRACT
An Analysis of the Practical Use of High School English Textbook CD-ROMs in Classrooms
This study aimed to analyze four contemporary high school English textbooks and discover systematic problems as well as effective improvements to be implemented. For this purpose, three textbook CD-ROM’s often used in national high school curriculum were selected. Our methodology sought to examine whether each piece of software addressed necessary language skills in a well rounded, balanced manner. The four essential language skills are speaking, listening, reading, and writing, all of which are supposed to be covered equally. Each textbook program was judged by its ability to conform to this standard. A survey was carried out, in which a total of 30 high school teachers and 60 high school students participated. The findings are as follows.
First, classroom materials are more heavily directed towards reading and listening skills than speaking or writing. The creative functions of language are more stifled compared to the receiving end of language study, reading and listening. On the other hand, it was shown that most participants surveyed found it difficult to achieve a productive learning environment that addressed the 4 language skills harmoniously due to a shortage of activities and functions that involved speaking and writing.
Second, we found that high school teachers mostly use CD-ROM’s when they teach reading and listening skills because of certain advantages. For example, CD- ROM’s introduce a variety of tasks for learners. Teachers, in particular, regard CD- ROM’s with a high level of satisfaction. Although students have relatively fewer opportunities to learn other skills, most teachers feel satisfied with CD-ROM’s. Within Korea’s English educational system, reading and listening skills seem to be considered more important than speaking and writing ones due to the importance of university entrance exams.
Third, students and teachers perceptions were that reading and listening sections of textbook materials were the most utilized in high school classrooms, and the students’ satisfaction level towards using English textbook CD-ROM’s also received positive evaluations. Their feedback pointed out that use of CD-ROM’s was useless for preparing for university entrance exams or high school midterms and finals, despite their usefulness in helping learner’s increase their interest and attention during lessons.
To improve high school textbook CD-ROM’s effectively in the Republic of Korea’s English public educational system, teachers and students emphasize on providing various visual and auditory aids like animations and video materials, constant updates to CD-ROM’s, and development of multimedia content at various levels. In addition, the opinions of teachers and students who attempt to utilize them in their classes should be reflected and taken into consideration, in addition to further efforts to develop CD-ROM’s that address school exams.
