This study interactively examined the relationships among users’ cognitive and emotional factors and attitudes toward social media monetization, and empirically tested the moderating effects of payment experience, perceived control, and privacy concern. The proposed research model conceptualized perceived value and emotional arousal toward social media as antecedents of monetization attitude, with attitude serving as a mediator leading to payment intention.
The results indicate that both perceived value and emotional arousal are core determinants of users’ attitudes toward social media monetization, and that monetization attitude has a significant positive effect on payment intention. These findings suggest that consumers accept monetized social media services not only through cognitive evaluations but also through emotional responses, thereby empirically demonstrating that attitude functions as a key psychological pathway in monetization acceptance.
Moreover, perceived value emerged as a central mediating variable within the model. Multiple factors include perceived ease of use, expertise, fairness, functionality, and perceived risk, which significantly influenced perceived value, which in turn formed a strong pathway leading to monetization attitude and payment intention. Notably, perceived risk exhibited a positive effect on perceived value, contrary to conventional consumer behavior research. This result suggests that risk is not merely a deterrent but may function as a signal of premium quality, professionalism, or selfidentity in the context of social media monetization.
The moderation analysis further revealed that payment experience, perceived control, and privacy concern significantly conditioned the relationships among key variables. Users with limited payment experience placed greater importance on ease of use, whereas experienced users evaluated content expertise more strongly. In addition, users with high privacy concern showed reduced emotional responses to perceived fairness, whereas users with high perceived control exhibited stronger emotional engagement as fairness increased. Finally, perceived control positively moderates the relationship between perceived value and monetization attitude, demonstrating that users’ sense of autonomy and choice is a critical factor in translating value perceptions into payment behavior.
From a theoretical perspective, this study extends the Theory of Planned Behavior and Uses and Gratifications Theory by proposing an integrated model in which cognitive value and emotional arousal influence payment intention through attitude. Furthermore, by incorporating the concept of autonomy into the monetization acceptance framework, this study elucidates the mechanism through which perceived control strengthens users’ willingness to pay.
From a practical standpoint, the findings suggest that social media monetization strategies should shift from a purely function-oriented approach toward a value- and emotion-centered strategy (Value– Emotion Approach). Fostering an autonomous payment environment, strengthening privacy protection, and designing premium experiential offerings are identified as key strategies for enhancing users’ monetization attitudes and payment intentions.
In conclusion, this study provides an integrated explanation of the psychological structure underlying social media monetization acceptance by centering on perceived value and emotional arousal and highlights the necessity for platforms to transition toward autonomy-based, value-driven monetization models.
