후기낭만주의 대표적인 노르웨이 작곡가인 에드바르드 하게루프 그리그(Edvard Hagerup Grieg, 1843.6.15~1907.9.4)는 바이올린과 피아노를 위한 소나타 3곡을 작곡하였다.
특히 그중에 소나타 3번 Op.45는 바이올린과 피아노를 위한 소나타 3곡 중 가장 유명하며 많이 연주되는 곡이다.
소나타 중 1번과 2번은 그가 20대 초반인 1865년과 1867년에 작곡되었지만, 소나타 3번은 그가 <페르귄트>(1876)와 <피아노협주곡>(1868 으로 명성을 떨치게 된 후인 1887년에 작곡한 곡으로 앞서 작곡한 2개의 소나타와는 작품성에서 큰 차이를 보인다.
그리그의 초기 작곡기법은 독일적 낭만주의 양식으로 쓰여 졌다. 하지만 19세기 후반 유럽 각지에서 일어난 시민혁명으로 인해 새로운 양식이 나타나게 되었다.
지금은 낭만주의의 한 측면이 된 자국의 전통적인 민속음악과 그 양식을 사용하여 독자적인 음악의 틀을 확립하고자하는 국민주의가 등장하였다. 그로 인해 그리그의 후기 작곡기법에도 점차 민족주의적인 색채가 띠게 된다.
바이올린 소나타 3번곡에도 노르웨이 무곡에서 힌트를 얻은 몇 개의 주제가 나타남으로 무곡 소나타라고 불리는 경우도 있다.
본 논문에서는 그리그가 활동했던 사회적 배경과 그로인한 작품배경과 음악적 특징에 대한 이해를 바탕으로 그의 음악을 연주하는데 도움을 주고자한다.

A Norwegian composer, Edvard Grieg. representative of post-Romanticism composed three pieces of sonata for violin and piano. Especially, sonata No.3 Op.45, is the most famous and commonly performed among three pieces of sonata for violin and piano.
Although he wrote No.1,2 of three pieces of sonata in his early-20th‘s,in 1865and 1867,hewroteNo.3 in 1887,rightafterhe caught on with Peer Gynt(1876premiere) and piano concerto, which made a great difference compared to the former 2pieces.
Grieg's early skill of composition came from the German Romanticism style. However, with civil revolutions which occurred all Over Europe in late 19th century, the country's own traditional folk Music and nationalism which tried to establish the form of exclusive Music using the national style appeared, that allowed Grieg to gradually use nationalistic color in his late composition skill.
This piece is called a dance music from the fact that several Subjects came from the hints of Norwegian dance music.
