The purpose of this study is to indentify the impact of the Big Five personality traits on post-traumatic growth in adults with trauma experiences, and to verify the dual mediating effects of perceived control and post-traumatic cognition in the relationship between the Big Five personality traits and post-traumatic growth in adults. The research questions are as follows. First, are there significant differences in the Big Five personality traits, perceived control, post-traumatic cognition, and post-traumatic growth according to adults' general characteristics(gender, occupation, religion)? Second, what are the correlations among adults' Big Five personality traits, perceived control, post-traumatic cognition, and post-traumatic growth? Third, what are the dual mediating effects of perceived control and post-traumatic cognition on the impact of adults' Big Five personality traits on post-traumatic growth? This study was conducted by obtaining consent from 234 adults with traumatic experiences nationwide and conducting a self-report questionnaire. A total of 234 questionnaires were returned. Of these, 11 were excluded because they reported no traumatic experience, provided random responses, or did not answer one or more questions. A total of 223 questionnaires were used for the final analysis. Data analysis was performed using SPSS Statistics 21.0 for descriptive statistics, reliability analysis, independent-samples t-tests, and Pearson's correlation analysis. The dual mediating effects were analyzed and verified using SPSS Macro PROCESS 4.2. The main results from the research analysis are as follows. First, significant differences in post-traumatic growth were found according to adults' occupation and religion. Individuals with occupations and religion showed higher levels of post-traumatic growth than those without. Furthermore, individuals with occupations showed higher extraversion, conscientiousness, and perceived control, and lower neuroticism and post-traumatic negative cognition, than those without. In contrast, no significant difference in post-traumatic growth was observed by gender. Neuroticism and post-traumatic negative cognition were higher in women than men, while perceived control was lower in women than men. Second, adults' post-traumatic growth showed significant positive correlations with extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, openness, and perceived control, and significant negative correlations with neuroticism and post-traumatic cognition. Third, perceived control and post-traumatic cognition were found to have complete dual mediating effects in the relationships between adults’ extraversion, conscientiousness, neuroticism, and post-traumatic growth. Openness showed partial dual mediating effects, confirming differences in cognitive processes according to personality traits of openness. This study systematically examined the dual mediating effects of perceived control and post-traumatic cognition in the relationship between Big Five personality traits and post-traumatic growth in adults. By analyzing mediating effects by sub-factors of the Big Five personality traits, it presented differences by personality traits in adults. Additionally, this study has identified key factors related to post-traumatic growth by providing insights into cognitive mechanisms leading to post-traumatic growth, and it holds significance in that it can be used as basic data for effectively addressing post-traumatic growth in counseling and treatment settings.
