Recently, energy has become the most important issue in the world. Since Korea has insufficient energy, they must strengthen their supply and demand structure to ensure proper use of energy and maximize consumption efficiency.
Medium and large buildings in Korea and overseas are implementing the Building Energy Management System (BEMS) to improve energy efficiency and reduce operational costs. The BEMS enables energy performance evaluation and diagnosis of the building, including investigation and analysis of energy consumption. In addition, it can be used as a wide-ranging tool to improve the building’s energy efficiency by reviewing additional energy savings and applying energy saving techniques.
To establish an effective BEMS, there must be research regarding the details of applying control along with energy consumption prediction. Therefore, this study conducted a real-time building energy simulation in order to develop a framework to predict energy consumption. This framework can analyze the effects of control in comparison with predicted consumption by applying appropriate control algorithms based on predicted energy consumption. Moreover, the real-time building energy simulation is conducted based on these two types of data to predict and control energy consumption. The framework was divided into two types (Part 1 framework and Part 2 framework), which were later integrated. Part 1 framework is based on forecasted weather, while Part 2 framework is based on monitoring data. The forecasted weather and monitoring data are used as input data to minimize inaccuracies and to cope with random events that are caused by the occupant in the implementation of real-time building simulations. This data was then compared with the typical simulation to increase its accuracy. The real-time building energy simulation is implemented as a co-simulation coupled with multiple softwares using BCVTB (Building Controls Virtual Test Bed).
The key findings of this study are as follows:
1) This study proposed a novel building energy simulation methodology where forecasted weather elements on a real-time basis and solar radiation which is calculated using the model using BCVTB, is inputted into the simulation. After analyzing energy consumption 4 times (4 days), it was found that all weather elements had an influence on energy consumption. Various weather elements were inputted as weather data in order to represent actual weather conditions as well as the changes in load according to the fluctuating weather.
2) Part 1 framework is based on real-time weather predictions and can be summarized as follows:
⦁ Predicted energy consumption and measured energy consumption are compared with the statistical hourly MBE and CV(RMSE), they satisfied the acceptable value with 1.3% and 20.1%.
⦁ When predicted energy consumption and measured energy consumption are compared with the statistical hourly MBE and CV(RMSE) using standard weather data, each was -4.2% and 34.8%, and the CV(RMSE) value did not satisfy the acceptable value. The prediction rate increased when the prediction is made using real-time weather data than when using standard weather data.
⦁ Each chilled water and cooling water set-point temperature control is simulated through optimized simulations based on real-time forecasted weather (chilled water: 8.5℃ cooling water: 27.5℃). Energy savings in comparison with predicted energy consumption were 11 kWh and 7 kWh because of simulations applying each temperature.
⦁ Similarly, when the both chilled water and cooling water set-point temperature control is applied simultaneously, the these were calculated as 8.5℃ and 27.75℃. In this case, energy savings in comparison with predicted energy consumption turned out to be 17 kWh because of simulations applying each temperature.
3) Part 2 framework based on real-time monitoring data can be summarized as follows:
⦁ Predicted energy consumption and measured energy consumption are compared with the statistical hourly MBE and CV(RMSE), they satisfied the acceptable value with -0.7% and 19.1%, and the prediction rate increased compared to Part 1 framework.
⦁ The enthalpy control and night purge algorithms were applied due to indoor and outdoor environmental elements predicted based on real-time monitoring data. The damper position of the Air Handling Units (AHUs) and the fan’s operation schedule, which are control variables, were calculated. As a result of simulation applying calculated control variables, energy savings in comparison with predicted energy consumption turned out to be 9 kWh and -7 kWh. Control on night purge may be disadvantageous from time to time.
4) Three(3) case studies were conducted with the integrated Part 1 and Part 2 frameworks. The first case study applied the chilled water set-point temperature control and enthalpy control simultaneously. While the second case study applied the cooling water set-point temperature control and enthalpy control simultaneously and finally, the third case study applied the chilled water and cooling water set-point temperature control as well as enthalpy control simultaneously. Energy savings compared to predict energy consumption turned out to be 12 kWh, 4 kWh, and 14 kWh, respectively.
5) The integrated framework can be implemented if forecasted weather and monitoring data can be input. Forecasted weather can be received from the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA), while monitoring data can be received from EM(C)S. This study presumed that EM(C)S is installed in the building, and did not conduct separate examination on applicability. Alternatively, an examination was conducted on the applicability of the integrated framework to key cities in Korea according to the of KMA, and the integrated framework can be applied to all regions in Korea if the building has EM(C)S installed.
The real-time building energy simulation is verified to be implemented and applied to an actual building in this study. Moreover, the prediction rate increased compared to using standard weather data for prediction, as it is based on the real-time building energy simulation. If predictive control simulation is conducted based on this result, rational control effects (energy savings, control variables) can be calculated. This methodology is a result of simulations, and has more reliability that the existing MPC study. Furthermore, while energy savings in this study are not so significant, it is effective in analyzing the result of control on a real-time basis. The control variables calculated here are delivered to the building operator to be used as decision-making data for operation.
