This study is to research the theme expression of Korean Chinese children who reside in China represented in the sandplay therapy and the effect on the quality enhancement of peer relationship and the reduction of behavior problem of Korean Chinese children through group sandplay therapy.
As Korean Chinese children participated in the study have the behavior problems such as anxiety, shrinking, thinking problems and aggressive behavior because of their cultural, social characteristics and they tend to associate with peer group due to the nature of childhood, depend on each other, we conducted the group sandplay therapy to help their continuous and healthy peer relationship.
This study set following study issues.
1) Does Group sandplay therapy improve the quality of peer relationship of Korean Chinese children in China?
2) Does group sandplay therapy reduce the behavior problem of Korean Chinese children in China?
3)With which theme do Korean Chinese children in China express the sand scene in the group sandplay therapy?
In order to verify the above study problem, 24 Korean Chinese children were selected as a study target, an advance meeting was given to 12 children of test group before the group play therapy, 3 groups of each 4 children were formed considering their individual character and age, the group sandplay therapy was conducted. It was proceeded for 80 minutes for each session, 2~3 times a week, total 8 therapy sessions were conducted. The advance test was conducted for every study subject, 12 children didn’t participate to the test and only post-test was conducted.
In order to measure the quality of peer relationship of Korean Chinese children in China, Kim Jin Gyeong and You An Jin(2002) extracted, translated, corrected and compensated only characteristics that are represented in the peer relationship from Network of relationship Inventory(NRI) by Buhrmester(1985). Also CBCL 6-18(Child Behavior Checklist 6-18) was conducted in order to measure the behavior problem. This scale measured the behavior problem such as internalizing, externalizing as it is the scale in which the primary caregiver of children evaluates the behavior problem and the status of adjustment of children.
This study obtained following result.
Fist, the group sandplay therapy was effective to the quality enhancement of peer relationship of Korean Chinese children. Friendship, mutual intimacy and social support, popularity conflict confrontation, unilateral initiative, withdraw stubborn and ignorance showed the effect among the sub factors of peer group relationship quality.
Second, the group sandplay therapy was effective to the reduction of behavior problem of Korean Chinse children in China. The behavior problem such as anxiety-depression, shrinking-depression, social immature, thought problems, attention problems, aggressive action, internalizing and externalizing showed the effect among the sub factors of behavior problem.
Finally, 8 themes which include emptiness, isolation and disconnection, concealment, disability and impairment, connections, deepening, parenting, change and integration and adaptation were commonly expressed in the sand scene of Korean Chinese children.
Above study result verified that the group sandplay therapy enhances the quality of peer relationship of Korean Chinese children in China, it showed the positive effect to reduce the behavior problem, we can find the psychological characteristics expressed in the sand scene of Korean Chinese children in China through the qualitative analysis of sand scene.
