According to the 2022 revised curriculum, it is necessary to establish future educational visions and change the curriculum system, including improving instruction and evaluation, to foster the competencies necessary for future society in response to digital transformation, climate ecological environment changes, and demographic structural changes caused by the development of artificial intelligence technology. It emphasizes strengthening basic digital literacy, including AI software education, as a curriculum that can cultivate the competencies required by future society. Teacher research, learner research, AI convergence education programs, and effectiveness analysis related to AI convergence education are being actively conducted as interest in convergence education using AI has recently increased. However, it is difficult to find in-depth phenomenological research on the experiences of students who are the subjects of AI convergence education.
This study introduced the research process and results of science club activities related to AI convergence education, further understood the experiences of students participating in AI convergence education-based science club activities under the theme of phenomenological research on AI convergence education-based science club activities, and analyzed the implications of AI convergence education science club activities for students to find the significance of AI convergence education in the educational field and explore the direction of progress.
Based on the research subject C Middle School science club activity result report, related data, and the researcher's teaching experience, the inquiry process and results were analyzed, and the three-stage interview method suggested by Seidman (1998) and Schuman (1982) was reconstructed to fit the research topic as a phenomenological research method, and Giorgi (1985)'s phenomenological experiential research method was applied in five stages.
The results of this study are summarized as follows.
First, students created AI-based student activity results by adding the function of AI to the consumer-centered convergence education activity process.
Second, students who participated in science club activities based on AI convergence education were interested in science, but they thought that artificial intelligence should be used carefully because it could threaten humans. Based on the experience of STEAM education, they recognized problems and considered the experience of converging content from various subjects and fields rather than general knowledge transfer classes, but they did not know clearly about AI convergence education.
Third, students selected topics as subjects in science club activities based on AI convergence education, but they suffered from lack of knowledge or competence in using various AI-related SW necessary for solving them. In particular, they complained of difficulties in learning voice data compared to learning artificial intelligence image data, and cited the limitation of being difficult to access at the middle school level, although they are interested in big data or how to use artificial intelligence with good performance.
Fourth, AI convergence education-based science club activities created a sense of accomplishment and confidence, and through the process of solving problems in harmony with friends, scientific attitudes such as interest, interest, and curiosity in artificial intelligence-related high-tech science were developed, and it was an opportunity to think positively about the career path of artificial intelligence.
In order to provide effective AI convergence education, related SW education and education using big data must be preceded, and this is expected to be realized by strengthening digital basic literacy education, including AI software education, and making AI and big data-based education essential in the 2022 revised curriculum. The results of this study also show that the advancement of digital basic literacy education for AI-using education is expected to occupy an important position in the future education field in various aspects, and the expansion of the area of convergence education is expected to be essential for nurturing human resources necessary for the future society.
