Sergey Prokofiev, 1891-1953 is a composer who was active in Russia and the United States and Paris in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. When he was active, the world was at a time when frequent wars and revolutions broke out due to World War I and changes in the political system to a communist state. As a result, cultural oppression against artists existed, and Prokofiev sometimes composed radical music to avoid national oppression of creative activities or economic difficulties in other countries, and sometimes composed traditional music that was the opposite.
Most of the works left by Prokofiev tend to be neoclassical. Neo-classical music is music that aims to combine the 20th century's composition and musical characteristics based on the form of classicalism, breaking away from the excessive emotional immersion of late romanticism. In other words, it is a combination of the counterpoint method of the Baroque period and the classical period form and the composition technique of the early 20th century.
The work to be studied in this paper, 「Cello Sonata, Op.119」, is the only sonata he has ever composed for cello. The song was written by Prokofiev while he was in bed during the Stalin regime's oppression. In this work, the elegant melody that Prokofiev aimed for and the form of classicalism are well illustrated. The warm, lyrical melody of the cello, the rich tone of the voice that appears across a wide range of notes, and the piano and cello's exchange of words in the form of conversation can be seen as features of the sonata. Although it takes the form of a sonata, the process of formation and the development of the theme are carried out in the early 20th century. Based on counterpoint methods such as Baroque's melody imitation and canon technique, and the sonata form of the Classical Age, the composition techniques that were frequently used in the early 20th century, such as precursors without precursors, frequent changes in beats, dissonance such as 2 or 7 degrees, semi-negative melodies, and duplication, appear.
In this paper, let's find out how these elements appear in 「Cello Sonata, Op.119」 and try to have a correct understanding of Prokofiev's work. Therefore, let us find out what the composition technique of Prokofiev's neo-classical tendency means between traditional and modern music of the past.
