Visiting the museum and watching the exhibition is the easiest way to experience culture and art. Art galleries range from small galleries for solo exhibitions to large public museums. Among them, a relatively large art museum requires the selection of a variety of moving lines for visitors in the exhibition viewing, and in the case of the exhibition hall which does not provide adequate visual information, the visitors become confused.
Therefore, this study focused on the spatial arrangement among the factors influencing the Visitor’s movements. Space Syntax was used as a method of analysis. Space Syntax is a theory that analyzes space influence and openness based on space arrangement, connection, and number. In this study, UCL DepthMap, a data analysis tool program, was used.
The flow of research is as follows. The analysis was conducted on 7 museums in operation. First of all, This study is analyzed spatial analysis through plane analysis and space syntax. Secondly, based on the correlation of data values and field investigations, derive the spatial depth with high accessibility and clarity. Finally, based on the derived reasonable depth of space, an improvement plan was proposed to improve the accessibility and clarity of the existing case, and the improvement plan was analyzed by Space Syntax and compared with the existing plan.
As a research result, the intelligibility was derived based on the data value, and it was used as an index to judge the space clearness and the space causing confusion to the visitors. The intelligibility means that the convergence to the straight line on the graph shows a reasonable spatial arrangement. Also, in order to derive the correlation between clarity, accessibility and controllability according to depth of space, it was classified into each type of depth, and data values of clarity, accessibility and controllability were comprehensively compared. As a result of comparison, accessibility, clarity, and control were the highest in Depth 4 ~ 5 type, and as the depth of the space deepened, the tendency of the data value to be lowered could be grasped.
This study in conducted on-site surveys to determine the feasibility of accessibility and clarity for each depth, and to see if they could be applied to actual space. The clarity of space connection was different from the data value, but the accessibility is better when the depth of the space is shallow.
In addition, I could confirm the problem of space syntax by field investigation. Even if the clarity and accessibility analyzed through space syntax for a specific space were high, study could be see some differences in some cases as a result of visiting actual cases. In this way, this study not only be grasped the accessibility and clarity of depth by depth, but also the limitations of space syntax.
In this study, the problems of the existing art museums are quantitatively identified and proposed for improvement. In addition, the field surveys is conducted to identify limitations of space syntax. As a result of this study, it is possible to provide a more reasonable and clear space for the visitors by planning the art museum by applying the improvement plan, analysis data value, and spatial arrangement direction.
