여성성장소설『새의 선물』연구

A growth novel has a story which has a rite of passage of a young girl who is going through the process of self-identity and finally grows up as a perfect human. But when the story is about a woman, not a young girl, it goes to a different side-a woman who goes through the growing process feels pain, frustration and gets depressed because there is a limitation in growing as a woman. And still, she is not grown yet. This is the reason why I chose this theme as a subject of the study. After 1990s, modern Korean novel focuses more on an individuals so it found that a growth novel is more interesting than any other novel. Therefore, it was about to be one of the genre but it couldn't be because it already belongs one of the genre-still the study of it is not active yet.
This study is focused on a novel, 『Present of a bird』, which is a typical woman growth novel. Through this novel, I considered what affects a woman's growth that surrounding her and thought about the moment that she finally reached in order to find the characteristic of woman growth novel.
In chapter 2, I defined the meaning of growth novel and classified the characteristics of woman growth novel. Actually, the characteristics of growth novel appears differently depend on cultures but it is same that a woman passes the process which makes her stronger and mentally matured. However, woman feels that she is different from man and it is the reason why the woman growth novel appears different from man's. The woman growth novel shows that she knows the limitation-living as a woman in society-and through the observation of other people, she finally finds her self-identity.
In chapter 3, based on the characteristics of woman growth novel, I studied about 'Present of Bird'.
First, I studied about her emotional injury that she refuses to come over. Her emotional injury affects negatively to find her identity so she keeps hiding. Then she chose ego separation to protect herself and remained away from everything-she feels sorrow.
In 2nd, I studied the aspects that women were the weakest people and the result of it. The main character, Jin Hee, faces patriarchal forces that only women suffers from and through this, she thinks that it is not right to choose a woman's life style depending on the patriarchal forces and finds a way to solve the situation.
In third one, I studied the moment that she feels falsity about love of other people. She feels and experiences pain through the love with Heo Suk and an abortion of her aunt which is caused by love. And she makes it perfect to achieve her self-identity.
In chapter 4, I defined the meaning of 『Present of Bird』. Generally, woman growth novel shows that a woman comes over the social limitation as a woman and finally finds her own good way to achieve self-identity. Somehow, she shows the aspect that she is not used to living together, in a mother-daughter relation, she shows wrong mother's instinctive love. It appears in the relation of father and daughter. Because of patriarchal aspect of her father, she doesn't want him.
『Present of Bird』 also shows the process of growing of a woman who suffers from patriarchal forces and comes over. And through this process, she finally grows up matured-physically and mentally.
Novels that we keep reading until now, they showed us a perfect process-the main character finally finds a good way to achieve self-identity-. But 『Present of Bird』 shows the sad aspects that the woman really suffers from many forces which are caused by men. It means that women are no good to improve herself and this is the difference from the other novel.
After 1990s, there are a lot of novels that can be classified as a woman growth novel. But this paper, I feel lack of studying only one novel. So I hope that more various studies could be able to proceed later.
