The purpose of this study is to examine the interaction and parenting behavior in double-income family in order to present the opinions about attaining a favorable relationship between parents and children in a double-income family. This study will examine the influence of interaction to parenting behavior, too.
Three major questions focused in this study are as follows :
1. What are the tendencies of interaction of double-income families?
2. What is the parenting behavior of double-income families?
3. How does the interaction of double-inncome families make parenting behavior different?
This study was carried out by a total of 104 randomly chosen subjects aged 5 and 6 year- old in 5 kindergartens operated by Kwan-ak Gu office, in Seoul and their parents who both have jobs. The experimental instrument for this study looked at the each family interacted. It was originally based on FACES III( Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scale III) revised by Olsen, portner and Lave and translated by Min, Hye-young(1998). The instrument used to test parenting behavior was Schaefer(1959)'s MBRI(Material Behavior Research Instrument) translated by Lee, Won-young(1983). Also, I used the data from 104 children for final analysis focusing on frequency, percentage, mean scheffe verification by SAS statistics program.
The result of this study were as follows :
1. The average score of the double-income family's interaction was 69(SD=7.77), higher than the mean score 50. The interaction of families was divided into the categories of cohesion and adaptability. The average score of cohesion in double-income families was 40 which was comparatively high. The average score of adaptability in double-income families was 29, slightly higher than the average score.
2. The general parenting behavior of double income families resulted in the mean of 158, where as the medium score was 120. Parenting behavior was divided into 4 subordinate fields such as love, hostility, autonomy, and control parenting behavior. With regard to parenting behavior of subjects in this study, love parenting behavior scored 46(SD=5.65), while hostility parenting behavior scored 40(SD=4.91), atonomy parenting behavior scored 42(SD=4.67), and control parenting behavior scored 30(SD=5.98). Love parenting behavior was higher than the other fields. it can be interpreted that parenting behavior was affectionate regardless of the children's education and parental economic activity.
3. Love and hostility parenting behavior made a meaningful difference by the cohesion level, between cohesion and adaptability. That is, parenting behavior in double-income families were more loving and less hostile by high cohesion.
