The purpose of this research is to develop an online learning platform that supports the pre-learning stage of the flip-learning educational method, which is emphasized as one of the learner-centered education methods in university educations. This was to develop an online learning platform that appropriately reflects the instructional design principles and components necessary for flip-learning and to verify the validity of the developed platform.
Developing an online learning platform for learning in the flip-learning pre-learning stage was to build the system and to derive the functional elements to operate in the system and to implement them. The system construction is the responsive web, which creates the page for the lecturer's lecture and the page for the learner's learning to achieve mutual functional compatibility. The process of implementation of the corresponding function was prepared through the procedural method of performing learning to be a conceptual reference framework. During the development process, experts reviewed and evaluated the usability to ensure the validity of the online learning platform.
Online learning platform development research for the flip-learning pre-learning stage has the following results.
First, online learning in flip-learning plays the role of ‘teacher’, ‘technology’, ‘promotion’, ‘design’ and ‘evaluation’ in the same way as offline learning, and at the same time, it induces learners to conduct self-directed learning. It was found that the use of an online learning platform is needed. This has become a conceptual reference framework for functional elements that should be designed to play a role in the implementation of the developed online learning platform.
Second, if we look at the form of functional implementation that the online learning platform should have in the pre-learning stage of flip-learning based on the traditional learning theory and the latest learning theory, there is a conceptual reference frame of the functional elements required for each platform. The existing platform used for flip-learning is provided only with the function of delivering learning information online. In the pre-learning stage of flip-learning, the principles and roles of instructional design have been thoroughly analyzed and the functions that can be implemented in the platform have not been systematically developed. In the pre-learning phase of flip-learning, the learner should have construction, communication, connection, and coordination in the learning contents suggested by the instructor, and the platform is implemented to perform the corresponding performance.
Third, when looking at the teaching design of the blackboard and other platforms that can be utilized in the pre-learning stage of flip-learning, there is a lack of function or difficulty in supporting the role of facilitating, designing, and evaluating. Also, most of the platforms have omitted the design of the process of synthesizing the contents or synthesizing the relevance between learning contents that are important in the principle of flip learning 8C instructional design.
Therefore, through the previous research and case study analysis, the development of the online learning platform in the pre-learning stage of flip learning was applied to the principles of instructional design of construction, communication, connection, and coordination of the 8C model. It had the first development process in Korea to prepare and actualize the applied functional elements as a conceptual reference framework.
Fourth, we developed the platform for the final test through a feasibility procedure that examined the adequacy and functional suitability of functional elements from three experts. In particular, improvements in usability evaluations received from experts were continuously revised and supplemented.
Taken together, an attempt to develop an online learning platform for performing the pre-learning phase of flip-learning conceptualizes the four principles of instructional design in the 8C model. As a system, we have prepared an online learning media tool specialized in flip-learning that expresses technology teaching knowledge.
