공공도서관 어린이사서를 위한 문헌정보학 교과과정 개선에 관한 연구

The Purpose of this study is to improve the undergraduate curriculum of library and information science for the children's librarianship in public library.
This paper consists of the literature research, present status research, questionnaire survey, and case studies. The literature research included the definition, features and necessity of the children's service and children's librarianship. Types and needs factors of the Library and information science curriculum for the children's librarianship were also investigated. Undergraduate curriculum of Library and information science in Korea were the subjects of present status research. And questionnaire survey was grasped present needs of children's librarian and analysis of questionnaire survey gave a broader understanding of the education experience of children's librarian and needs of the curriculum of the library and information to survey is the methods of the children's librarian needs and recognition measurement. Curriculum of Library and information science in the United States and Canada were the subjects of case studies which focus on analyzing of curriculum of the library and information science related to the children's librarianship.
The followings are the finding from the present status research about proving subjects in curriculum of library and information science department in the Korea.
First, related to the reader's advisory subjects were provided for junior or senior and an elective courses. This subjects were consisted of theory and general ideas related to reader's advisory. And 23(71.8%) in undergraduate school, 7(31.6%) in graduate school were provided this subjects.
Second, related to the children's literature and material subjects also provided for junior or senior and elective courses. This subjects were consisted of general things about children's service. Only 10 undergraduate school were provided this subjects.
The questionnaire survey was conducted during April and May in 2006 to children's librarians in 60 public libraries and children's libraries. The followings are the findings from the survey about experience of children's librarians and providing curriculum of library and information science for training children's librarians.
First, Most of the children's librarian recognized their specialization of children's librarian. And specialization of children's librarians were needed not only working experience in the children's service area, but also curriculum of the library and information science.
Second, Many children's librarians were not experienced to the curriculum subjects about children's service and librarianship. Because of those subjects were not provided. Also most of the having a experienced librarians evaluated the subject which provided independent are the most effective methods.
Third, three subjects which are introduction to children's service, children's literature and material, and reader's advisory service were provided for the first to be a children's librarian. Specially, needs of the introduction to children's service were very high. Also children's service practice was included to curriculum of library and information science.
Based on the literature review, present status research, questionnaire survey and case studies the ways to improve and develop the curriculum of library and information science are suggested. And finally, curriculum model for to being children's librarian was suggested.
The curriculum should not only include theoretical and practice approaches to all functions of children's librarian, but also keep up with newly developing topics and fields. Developing of curriculum of library and information science for being children's librarian should take on the following characteristics.
First, development of subjects are needed, for this, introduction about children's service was provided at the first. And increasing the institutions which give a major a children's literature and material.
Second, the maintenance of name and contents of subjects related to children's librarianship is necessary. The name of the subjects is important, in order to having the relationship which is close with the scope and a contents of the subject which it provides from actual study.
Finally, the curriculum model of undergraduate curriculum of library and information science for children's librarianship was suggested to based on education aim, type, time and contents of three main subjects which are introduction of children's service, children's material, and reading advisory.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 공공도서관 및 어린이도서관에서 어린이서비스를 담당할 어린이사서를 위한 문헌정보학 교과과정의 개선 방안을 제시하는데 그 목적을 두었다. 이를 위해서 문헌연구, 현황조사, 설문조사 및 사례연구를 실시하였다.
문헌연구를 통해 어린이서비스의 개념, 어린이사서의 의의와 어린이사서와 관련된 교육과정의 특징을 고찰하였다. 국내 현황조사에서는 국내 대학 문헌정보학과를 중심으로 어린이사서 육성과 관련된 교과목의 제공 현황을 조사하였다. 어린이사서 대상 설문조사를 통해 사서들의 교육 경험과 향후 문헌정보학 교과과정에 필요한 관련 교과목과 교과내용에 대한 요구를 파악하였다. 공공도서관 어린이실 및 어린이도서관에서 근무하는 어린이사서를 대상으로 2007년 4월 12일부터 2007년 5월 12일까지 한 달 동안 설문지를 배포하여 회수하였다.
국외 사례연구에서는 미국 및 캐나다의 교육기관에서 제공하고 있는 어린이사서 육성 관련 교과목을 파악하고 해당 교과목의 교과내용을 조사하여 분석하였다.
국내 4년제 대학에서 제공하고 있는 어린이사서 육성 관련 교과목의 현황은 다음과 같다.
첫째, 독서지도 및 교육론 관련 교과목은 대학의 3학년 및 4학년을 대상으로 선택 과목의 형태로 제공되며, 전체 32개 문헌정보학과 설치 대학 중, 학부의 경우 23개(약 71.8%), 대학원의 경우 7개(약 31.6%)에서 관련 교과목을 교과과정 내에 편성하고 있었다. 현재 관련 교과목을 제공하고 있는 대학을 중심으로 관련 교과목의 교과내용을 살펴본 결과, 대체로 일반적인 독서 및 독서교육의 의의와 목적 등을 다루는 이론 중심의 교과내용이 제공되고 있었다. 또한 교과내용 내에 어린이자료나 독서치료와 같이 교과과정 내 독립 교과목으로 제공되어야 할 필요가 있는 교과내용이 포함되어 있는 경우도 다수 있는 것으로 조사되었다.
둘째, 어린이청소년자료와 관련된 교과목 역시 대학의 3학년과 4학년 학생을 대상으로 선택과목의 형태로 편성되어 제공되고 있었다. 국내 문헌정보학 전공 설치 대학 중 학부의 단 10개교(약 31.2%)만이 관련 교과목을 제공하고 있었다. 현재 교과목을 제공하는 대학을 중심으로 관련 교과목에서 제공되는 교과내용을 분석해 본 결과, 교과목의 명칭에서도 알 수 있듯이 대부분의 대학에서 어린이와 청소년을 하나로 통합하여 관련 문학 및 자료에 대한 내용을 제공하고 있었다. 제공되는 교과내용은 어린이서비스 이용자 자체에 대한 것과 어린이청소년이 이용하는 자료에 대한 내용, 그리고 어린이청소년서비스의 특징 등 어린이서비스와 관련된 내용을 포괄적으로 다루고 있는 것을 알 수 있었다.
설문조사의 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다.
첫째, 현재 어린이서비스를 담당하고 있는 사서의 대부분이 스스로 ‘보통’ 이상의 전문성을 지니고 있다고 인식하고 있었으며, 어린이사서로서의 전문성은 현장 근무 경험과 사서 스스로 관심 분야를 학습함으로써 획득하고 있었다. 또한 도서관에서의 현장 경험과 문헌정보학 교육기관에서 개설한 교과과정의 이수를 통한 방법을 어린이사서로서 갖춰야 할 전문적인 지식과 기술을 습득하는 가장 효과적인 방법으로 인식하고 있었다.
둘째, 많은 어린이사서들이 문헌정보학 교과과정을 이수하면서 어린이서비스 관련 교과목을 수강한 경험이 없는 것으로 나타났다. 그 이유는 대학의 문헌정보학 교과과정에 관련 교과목이 개설되지 않았기 때문인 것으로 밝혀졌다. 또한 관련 교과목을 수강한 경험이 있는 사서들의 대부분이 문헌정보학 교과과정 중 독립된 교과목의 형태로 개설된 관련 교과목 수강 방법을 어린이사서로서의 지식과 기술의 기초를 얻는 가장 좋은 방법으로 평가하였다.
셋째, 향후 문헌정보학 교과과정 내에 우선적으로 개설이 필요한 교과목은 ‘어린이서비스개론(기초/이해)’, ‘어린이문학/자료’, ‘독서지도/교육’이었다. 특히 어린이서비스개론(기초/이해)의 경우 현 교과과정 내에서 제공하지 않는 교과목으로, 그 요구도가 다른 교과목에 비해 상대적으로 높게 나타났다. 또한 어린이서비스 실습의 경우 모든 사서들이 필요성을 공감하고 있었다.
이상의 내용을 바탕으로 어린이사서를 위한 교과목의 개설 방향을 제시한 후, 구체적인 교과과정 모형 안을 제안하였다. 관련 교과목의 개설 방향은 다음과 같다.
첫째, 국내에서 제공되고 있는 어린이사서 육성 관련 교과목의 수가 매우 적기 때문에 우선 관련 교과목의 개발이 필요하다. 이를 위해 어린이서비스에 대한 소개와 어린이서비스를 제공하는데 필요한 기초 지식과 기술의 토대를 제공할 수 있는 교과목인 어린이서비스개론 교과목을 우선적으로 개설해야 한다. 또한 어린이문학 및 자료와 관련된 교과목을 제공하는 교육기관의 수를 현재보다 증가시켜야 한다. 그리고 어린이정보활용능력, 어린이도서관 경영과 관련된 교과목 역시 대학원 과정이나 실무자의 특강 등의 방법을 이용하여 문헌정보학 교과과정 내에 편성하여 제공할 필요가 있다.
둘째, 교과목 명칭 및 교과내용의 정비가 필요하다. 교과목의 명칭은 실제 수업에서 제공하는 교과의 범위 및 내용과 밀접한 관계를 가지기 때문에 매우 중요하다. 따라서 현재 국내 대학 문헌정보학과에서 제공하고 있는 독서교육, 어린이문학 및 자료와 관련된 교과목 명칭의 정비가 필요하며, 또한 교과목 명칭에 부합하는 교과내용을 제공하기 위한 구체적인 방안을 마련하여야 한다.
끝으로 어린이사서 육성을 위해 필요한 문헌정보학 교과과정의 교육 목표, 교과의 학습시기와 유형, 그리고 실제 교과과정 내 우선적으로 개설이 필요한 어린이서비스개론, 어린이자료, 독서지도 교과목을 중심으로 어린이사서를 위한 문헌정보학 교과과정 모형 안을 제안하였다.
