The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of self-monitoring strategies on the task completion rates and correct response rates of math problems performed by underachievers. The research design of multiple probe baseline across subjects was used and task completion rates and correct response rates were measured. The subjects were 3 female elementary underachievers and 31 sessions were implemented.
The study results were as follows. First, self-monitoring strategies were effective on improving the task completion rates of math problems performed by elementary underachievers during the period of independent seatwork. Second, self-monitoring strategies were effective on improving the correct response rates of math problems performed by elementary underachievers during the period of independent seatwork. Third, the task completion rates and correct response rates were maintained 2 weeks after the program was completed.
There were at least two limitations of this study. First, this study results cannot be generalized to children with different categories of disabilities. Second, this study results also cannot be generalized to boys. Third, this study results cannot be generalized to middle- or high school underachievers.
On the basis of this study results, the following recommendations for future studies were suggested. First, follow-up studies should be extended to other subject matters, gender, or school levels. Second, future studies should be conducted by controlling interfering variables such as student characteristics. Third, generalization of the effects of self-monitoring strategies on the task completion rates and correct response rates of math problems performed by elementary underachievers also should be investigated.
