      In the last few decades, statistical ideas and statistical methods have made their remarkable growth in connection with almost every phase of human activity. Hence, statistical data and statistcal techniques have become a vital factor in the decisions, analyses, and forcasts of the modern businessman.
      Clearly, numerical data are derived from surveys, experiments, and other sources. There are great many important problems that arise in connection with the direct collection of data ‥‥ problems such as whether or not to take a sample; and if so, what method to use in taking the sample; and how large a sample is needed to arrive at a practically useful generalization.
      All the methods which I applied in this essay are based on the assumption of randomness, In this connection, randomness refers to methods which we use in obtaining a sample, particularly, to the things which we must avoid so that we can rightfully say that we have a random sample. A sample which is selected in such a way that each item in the populations has known(not necessarily equal) chance of being chosen is appropriately called a probability sample.
      Since the subject of sample designs cover a considerable amount of material, I have merely attempted to present a brief introduction to such special sampling schemes as stratified sampling, quota sampling, cluster sampling, and systematic sampling,
