-A Study on The Revolutionary party of Cheondo-gyo's
'The New Humanity' during the Japanese Occupation -
'The New Humanity' which means "new human beings" was a magazine issued in 1926 by a revolutionary party of Cheondo-gyo after they were divided into two parts: the conservative and revolutionary party and lasted until the end of the Japanese colonial period. The New Humanity t nominated Jinhang Kong as the first president and the magazine was run by an independent management system. In each province, there was a local branch and its reporters. After the independence of management, 'The New Humanity' actively introduced advertisements and maintained that policy from 1935 to 1941. 'The New Humanity' was distributed by the separate selling system of 'Gebyuk', a literary magazine, which means "the Creation."Through this system, 'The New Humanity' possessed ten thousand subscribers.
However, 'The New Humanity' was not liberated from the control of the media of the Japanese colonial government. They censored articles more than 60 times. Especially in 1932, there were comprehensive professional deletions of new articles. The Japanese colonial government, at last, fired Jinhang Kong, president, which resulted in a drastic change of 'The New Humanity's purpose.
The year 1934 can be regarded as a pivotal point in the change of 'The New Humanity'. The main change of the years previous to 1934 was "Cheondo-kyo's Fundamental Doctrine" and that of the latter years is the "Daedongbang Doctrine" Cheondo-kyo's Fundamental Doctrine was a concept formed by Lin Choi after 1928 and became a target of Anti-Cheondo-kyo led by socialist's groups. The reason of conflicts between the two groups was an article titled "The Chosun Movement and The Territory Problem" written by Gigan Cho printed in the 59th issue of 'The New Humanity'. After this incident, the announcement of the Daedongbang Doctrine of Lin Choi and the Inauguration of Jungchuwancham and the establishment of Sijung Society were rationalized by a political line called "Siunsibyun, Yongsiyonghwal", which means "things change according to time and people have to use time well". This logic was developed to rationalize the Deadongbang Doctrine of the revolutionary party of Cheondo-gyo and pro-Japanese groups after the Chinese-Japanese war.
