The purpose of this study is to examine the form and the structure of costumes in Baek-jae Kingdom, including hairstyles, ornaments of crown, costumes, accessories, based on references of historical documents. By doing that, it aims at understanding the structure of costumes expressed in the remains of the Baek-jae Kingdom, recovering its formative characteristics through comparison of different historical records.
For this purpose, the periodic range of this study is limited to that from the beginning of the Kingdom (100 A.D.) to the fall of the nation (700 A.D). The reference books include not only the Korean history books such as Samguksagi and Samgukyusa, but also the Chinese historic books, including Yangseo, Buksa, Gudangseo, Dangseo and Sindangseo.
The content of study is as follows; Chapter 1 studies the necessity and the purpose of this study. Chapter 2 studies how the Baek-jae Kingdom had been formed, and its relation to the surrounding countries - which are assumed to have had fundamental influence on formation of Baek-jae costumes - mainly through literature referen
Based on relevant literatures and unearthed remains, Chapter 3 examines the structure and the form of Baek-jae costumes, specifically looking at the diadem ornaments, clothes, hairstyles and accessories. In Chapter 4, the characteristic of the Baek-jae costumes are derived from the study done in the previous chapters.
This study can be summarized as below. First, looking at the hairstyle in the Baek-jae, they usually had the styles of Ssang-gae and Byeonbalsuh. Besides, Chongrimsa Terracotta Figurines and hairpins unearthed in the tomb of King Muryong revealed that Topknot in Su-gae style existed at that time as well. However, the hairstyles found in the incense Burner Gilt-Bronze can be said to have had a very unique style of the Baek-jaes own.
Second, the distinctiveness of the Baek-jaes ornaments of crown lies on the difference of its decoration, not on the diversity. Ornament of crown itself had indicated positional levels of governmental officials by using different materials. This fact shows that costume had served as a means that firmly establish the class system during that period.
Third, as shown in the incense burner of Geumdong-Yongbong-Bongrae Mountain and Jikgong-do of Yang, Baek-jae costumes had its distinctive form in sleeve and collar. Apart from these structural differences, the Baek-jae costumes show their unique style in dressing, for example, having belt ornament untied, or tied in double. However, it is hard to interpret this as a formatted style, but it can be seen as a kind of individual style of wearing.
Fourth, the uniqueness shown in accessories and patterns, representing a sense of diversity and heterogeneity, had been generated by original way or creation. The theory of Yim Yang and Five Elements, which is an oriental philosophy defining fundamental principles and harmony of the universe, had a considerable impact particularly on the sense of color for Baek-jae period.
As such, five colors based on the theory of five elements had been applied to costumes of five social groups, and each color identified a specific class, as well as purpose of wearing.
During the Baek-jae Kingdom, religion was not an exclusive possession of a specific group, but rather a shared one regardless of the upper and low classes, the noble and the commoners. Alongside that, foreign religions from overseas including China were more likely to have been combined with the traditional beliefs to form a unified religion system of Koreas own. This assumption is backed up with patterns expressed in costumes of that period. Mainly with the Buddhism, which was the most widespread religion in Baek-jae, there were Taoism, and folk beliefs which had been reflected together on unique patterns of their own. In these patterns, symbolic connotations of each religion are harmoniously mingled in together.
The study on cultural relationships among Baek-jae, Koguryo, Shilla, China, and Japan still leaves much to be discussed. Besides, it is facing considerable problems and limitations in the theory and methodology for the study about the ancient art history. Accompanied with more concentrated efforts to solve the problems, the Baek-jae costumes should be redefined and repositioned in the history of costume of the Three Nations Period, particularly in terms of its historical importance. In this sense, I hope that this study may contribute and provide some help to advance this line of studies.
