The purpose of this study is to examine the aspects and effects of various "the otherness" represented in Oh Jung-Hee's novels, based on the theory of "the otherness", which Mikhail Bakhtin conceptualized in his novel theories.
Literature not only gives instruction and pleasure to readers but also diagnoses modern society and shows the way human beings should choose for the future of society. In other words, the crucial function of literature is to judge the present times, predict the possibilities of the future, and prepare for making these possibilities become reality.
The modern novels are deeply connected with not only actions or events among characters, but also sensitive responses and perception of characters who have exceptional awareness.
Oh Jung-Hee is a writer dealing with internal consciousness of character precisely and acutely rather than external events. In other words, she is a writer highlighting individual's consciousness by revealing internal consciousness, not portraying the causes of character's frustration and conflicts through external element, like society or system.
And Oh Jung-Hee applies narrations such as a internal monolog, or an association of ideas and focuses more on mental states, co-existence of consciousness and unconsciousness world, than objective reality. She has depicted people who show exceptional awareness, such as sprout of frustration, uncertainty, gloom, or weariness.
These characteristics of Oh Jung-Hee's works may be understood better when they are connected to Bakhtin's thought.
Mikhail Bakhtin is the Russian philosopher and literary theorist who denied the Western way of thought by his understanding of the other. He insisted that "the other" should be a single and unique one to see, remember the subject.
The self(subject) experiences himself and the world quite differently from the way in which he is experienced and perceived by others.
Bakhtin's concept of "the otherness" encompasses his life-long thoughts.
According to Bakhtin's concept of "the otherness", "I am conscious of myself and become myself only while revealing myself for another, through another, and with the help of another. The most important acts constituting self-consciousness are determined by a relationship toward another consciousness. he looks into the eyes of another or with the eyes of another. I cannot manage without another, I cannot become myself without another ; I must find myself in another by finding another in myself."
And to understand Bakhtin's concept of "the otherness", one of the important theory we must know is "Dialogism".
Unlike the other theories which focus on the external elements of literature, Bakhtin's theory forms dialogic relationship by connecting readers, writers and all the elements in literature context. The core of Bakhtin's dialogism is to pursue the open world through constant dialogue between individuals who are different.
Language arises from man's need to express himself, to objectify himself. All the diverse areas of human activity involve the use of language.
The characters in the Oh Jung-Hee's novels have a perception of death through a keenly consciousness, time, color, symbolic objects and events and because of that they have uncertainty and fear consciousness. And they have a strong feeling on the doubt of life or solitude, weariness in everyday life and because of that they have to live with uncontrollable escaping desire. Her novel, a kind of puzzle or riddle, becomes a model which shows a profound understanding of the internal world of the characters. These internal world of characters is not separate things, but is linked with each other in the internal world of the characters.
Instead of showing the event itself, Oh Jung-Hee depicts various internal discourses of various characters reacting to the event. In this way, Oh Jung-Hee can open up the various possibilities of interpretation against the standardizing tendency of her own age.
The attempt to analyze the narration and traits of the novels can be a way to clarify the peculiar traits of her novels.
Conclusively through studying about the Bakhtin's theory, it is clarified that the analysis of the conditions of internal dialogic relations between the discourse and characters in Oh Jung-Hee' novels is important in the discourse study.
