The purpose of this study was to examine and estimate the relationships between principals' leadership and school organizational effectiveness & sub-components by meta-analysis. There was no compre- hensive meta-analysis on this subject in Korea. Therefore, the meta-analysis on this subject would clarify the impact on school organizational effectiveness and provide for managerial decision-making.
An extensive search of many computerized databases was performed to locate primary studies that were published during the past 20 years(1990-2009). The study selected 289 papers(658 effect sizes) that had two variables of the principals' leadership and the school organizational effectiveness(& sub-components of school organizational effectiveness).
The CMA(Comprehensive Meta-Analysis developed by Biostat) was used for the meta-analysis. Major analytical procedures included: (1) estimation of between-study homogeneity and pooled effect size; (2) meta-regression; (3) assessment of publication bias; (4) cumulative analysis; (5) omit a study analysis. Moderators were included the type of publication year, school level(elementary or secondary school), school type(public or private school).
This study was the first comprehensive research of meta-analysis that investigated precedent researches on the relationship between the principals' leadership and school organizational effectiveness (& sub-components) in Korea. The analytic results for the relationship were as follows. The principals' leadership had a close relationship with variables such as school organizational effectiveness & sub-components. According to BHHR meta-analysis, the weighted mean correlation was .377. Lower & upper limit of the confidence intervals(95%) were .356 and .399, respectively. The relationship between two variables was rarely affected by the research(or publication) year. The slope of meta- regression was .00726. There was just a little publication bias, too. Among the sub-components of principals' leadership, moral leadership had the strongest strength of relationship (=.525) to the school organizational effectiveness. And organizational health of the 11 sub-components of school organizational effectiveness was most intensively affected by principals' leadership. The relationship between the principals' leadership and the school organizational effectiveness was affected by the moderators, too. The effect size of secondary school was smaller than that of elementary school, and the difference was very small. But, there was no relationship between principals' leadership and the students' achievement(& teachers' job-stress).
In conclusion, it is important to cultivate the moral leadership, transformational leadership & emotional leadership in order to enhance the school effect. Nevertheless, it is difficult to make a fair showing of students' achievement by means of principals' leadership. There is no omnipotent leadership. So, it is important to exercise their leadership as the case may be.
