Literature includes its own cultural symbols. In the way of reading, it is essential to understand cultural factors in the literature. Therefore, languages, uses of language and cultures can be taught integrally by instruction of literature. Hence, literature plays a role as a cultural medium of language in the field of language education. This will be able to be applied to Korean education as a foreign language. The subject of this study is to suggest teaching reading skills using stories which are short enough to be handled in a reading class but has Korean cultural aspects in it.
Factors which influence the process of reading are divided into Text and Reader. While text factors are structures and contexts, reader factors are background knowledge and the purpose and strategies of reading. In case of foreign Korean learners, it is common not to have backgrounds fully. Thus, this study focused on researching the concrete methods of filling the basic cultural gap with reinforced structures of text and examined those effects.
Chapter Ⅰ presents the purpose and the category of this study. Chapter Ⅱ deals with the definition of story, the story grammar which consists of structures and syntatic rules as well as analysis of meaning and formal schema as story schema. Based on the story grammar of Stein and Glenn, this study categorized the story to setting, initiating event, internal response, attempt, consequence, and reactions.
Chapter Ⅲ classifies sorts of story structures and analyzes real 3-4 stories according to classification. The meaning of real stories is not a experimental text which is composed of several words or sentences but a text which is made up of various episodes. Stein and Glenn named these real stories THEN structure, BECAUSE structure and AND structure referred to the type of connections. This study modified Stein and Glenn's THEN and BECAUSE structures and added COMPLEX structure. In addition, the strategy of activating schema is used for learners to acquire the story structure efficiently. As the specific strategies, questions, graphic organizers, summaries are used.
In Chapter Ⅳ, the method of story reading education are applied to the actual class. Experiment was performed in a private Korean education institute in Seoul. The objects were the upper beginners and consisted of two groups: experimental and comparative which are separately 16 people.
In Chapter Ⅴ, the results of experiment are analyzed. The experimental group who learned the method of story reading education had better understanding than the comparative group who didn't. It is same with THEN, BECAUSE and COMPLEX structure. Moreover, the difference from initiating event, internal response and attempt between two groups is statistically significant. The experimental group showed better scores than the other. This meant the teaching method of using story structure is helpful to improve learners' level of recall and comprehension on story reading.
Finally, Chapter Ⅵ summarizes previously discussed achievements and proposes importance of this study and future study topics.
