With the development of new types of cosmetic instruments and permanent products using chemicals, various hair styles are in fashion. Especially magic straight permanent has been getting much popularity because it helps people to create soft and glossy hair, however the problems of hair damage hair caused by using permanent wave and heat-emitting tools are serious.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of the treatment and the wheat flour on hair damage when used in magic straight permanent. In order to identify the effects of the treatment product on the market and the wheat flour, one of natural materials being used widely, physical, chemical and sensuous changes of hair were observed and analyzed after treatment.
For the experiment, healthy hair was extracted from eight healthy women over the age of 20 and divided into four groups. Observation proceeded under the experimental conditions as following.
Non-treated hair maintained its original virgin hair characteristics(group A). Magic straight hair was defined as the hair treated with magic straight permanent on the virgin hair(group B). The wheat flour treated hair was defined as the hair treated with magic straight permanent, using magic straight permanent cream which includes Thioglycolic acid as reducing agent and the permanent wave lotion mixed with wheat flour(group C). Finally, treatment treated hair was defined as the hair treated with magic straight permanent after applying the treatment agent(group D).
Consequently, first, as for the change in softness and the sense of friction, the damage to the magic straight hair was greater than the damage to the wheat flour treated hair, and the treatment treated hair showed to have the least hair damage. After the second treatment similar result came out.
Second, as for the change of elasticity of hair, magic straight hair showed the lowest elasticity, and relatively the wheat flour treated and the treatment treated hair showed higher elasticity. After the second treatment the elasticity got lower, and still, the magic straight hair had the lowest elasticity.
Next, in the contents of moisture, non-treated hair showed 13.4% of moisture contents, while the magic straight treated hair contained no more than 11.8%, and the wheat flour treated and the treatment treated hair showed higher contents of moisture with 12.3% and 12.7% each. After the second treatment the moisture contents got less and showed the least percentage in the magic straight hair.
Lastly, in the experiment on the alkali solubility and hair protein dissolving, hair damage degree was considerable in order of 'magic straight hair > the wheat flour treated hair > the treatment treated hair > non-treated hair'. Hair damage got worse after two times of treatment.
In conclusion, the wheat flour treatment was more effective in reducing hair damage than the treatment with magic straight permanent only, but less effective than when using the treatment agent. This is because wheat flour contains protein named gluten, which consists of big molecules, and this makes it hard for gluten to be absorbed into hair, while tiny particles of concentrated protein are emulsified in the treatment agent, which makes it easy to be absorbed into hair cuticle strata.
Although natural materials such as eggs, milk, sea tangle, olive oil, etc. are being used as well as wheat flour for minimizing hair damage, their specific effect on damaged hair has not proved yet. Thus this consideration on our study is believed to be so meaningful that more studies using various materials need to be conducted.
