Korean orthography can be considered a fundamental and common competency required for communication skills in Korean language education. The notations defined in Korean orthography constitute the building blocks that enable communication across vocabulary, grammar, reading, and writing, making Korean orthography education a starting point for Korean language education.
Considering this, this paper discusses Korean orthography education from the perspective of “Pedagogical Content Knowledge” centered on the instructor. This system organizes Korean orthography knowledge into “graphology, phonology, morphology, semantics, and syntax” based on content, with the instructor as the main agent of Korean orthography education. Furthermore, to ensure effective instruction, Korean orthography education was not separated from other teaching methods. Instead, existing textbooks containing Korean orthography were analyzed to identify relevant topics and integrated them into a concrete educational plan. Korean orthography education can be structured as an integrated system that focuses on notation and grammar, supplemented by dictionary content, and elaborates on the instructor’s expertise and specialized knowledge. Within this framework, Korean orthography education is specifically realized through “Pedagogical Content Knowledge.” Korean orthography education based on Pedagogical Content Knowledge can be defined as a system that encompasses Korean orthography-related content, curriculum, learner characteristics and variables, and various teaching strategies, based on an understanding of the educational goals of Korean language education.
Pedagogical Content Knowledge system categorizes Korean orthography by content area and provides a knowledge framework for instructors to apply in classroom settings, focusing on orthography. Specifically, it presents basic and common Korean orthography provisions and content from a teaching and learning perspective, based on learner learning stages. Representative vocabulary for Korean orthography education is selected, and curriculum levels, related Korean orthography provisions, and content are specified, providing a basis for objective educational design tailored to the learner’s educational level. Based on this detailed knowledge of Korean orthography, instructors can comprehensively consider criteria such as educational level, vocabulary frequency, grammatical characteristics, and the Korean dictionary system to design and apply a Pedagogical Content Knowledge system optimized for Korean orthography.
This educational model for Korean orthography education condenses the knowledge system required by instructors and specific teaching methods applied to it, taking into account learners’ learning stages and knowledge levels. It presents a practical Korean orthography knowledge system and teaching methods for both instructors and learners. This model comprises knowledge of grammatical norms, which corresponds to the Pedagogical Content Knowledge of Korean orthography, a teaching system, and a grammar system necessary for learners. Therefore, instructors can proactively strengthen their teaching and problem-solving skills through the knowledge, experience, and application skills of Korean orthography provided by Understanding Grammar. Furthermore, learners can cultivate the skills necessary for Korean language education, including vocabulary, grammar, reading, and writing, through a restructured Korean orthography education tailored to their individual interests and needs.
