The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships among daycare teacher's self-esteem, job stress, and stress coping strategies. 211 daycare teachers working at nurseries in Siheung, Kyungi province, participated in completing three kinds of questionnaires: Self-Esteem Inventory(SEI); Job-related Stress Inventory(JSI); and Stress Coping Strategy(SCS). The data collected were analyzed with frequency analysis, One-way ANOVA, and correlation analysis methods.
The results of this study were summarized as follows:
First, the self-esteem of teacher was different according to their age, martial status, and career, and they showed the highest job stress in the area of managing children's activities. Teachers in private children's care institutions got high stress with the factors as follows: activities with children, economical stability, authoritative management, and interpersonal relationship. In addition, teachers tended to use the controlled management method as a coping strategy.
Second, the teachers' self-esteem had negative relationship with job stress of children's activity-related, task-related, and interpersonal related. The self-esteem had a positive relationship with the controlled management out of stress coping strategies. The job stress related to both children's activities and task, had a negative relationship with the controlled management out of stress coping strategies. There was a positive relationship between job stress related to authoritative management and avoidance strategy while there was a negative relationship between job stress related to authoritative management and controlled management strategy. The interpersonal-related job stress had a positive relationship with symptom management.
It was found that the daycare teachers' self-esteem, job-stress, and stress coping strategies were related. Thus, the government needs to support the program development to make teachers' self-management and self-esteem increase.
