This study is devoted to produce the reliable and diverse information on first-flowering dates of three deciduous trees (cherry, peach and pear) as well as the high-resolution daily temperature in South Korea using both climate model and phenological thermal-time model.
The current study composes three major experiments: (1) reproduction on the high-resolution gridded temperature and FFD, (2) forecast on the upcoming FFD using seasonal (1- to 3-month lead) prediction system, (3) projection on future FFD change in associated with global warming.
First of all, for reproducing the high-resolution gridded temperature and FFD, dynamical downscaling based on WRF v3.0 was performed using NCEP reanalysis-2 data as lateral forcing, for the period of 10 years (1999-2008). The WRF output with find-scale grid spacing (3km) reflected the detailed topographical effect. However, the reproduced temperature distribution was different from the one of observation due to systematic biases (i.e., cold bias for early spring) in the model. Therefore, statistical bias correction method was adopted and applied to the model result. After bias correction, the result with correction well captures the general characteristics of observed temperature compared to those without correction, while maintaining the detailed topographical signal. Then, the high-resolution (3km) gridded FFD data was estimated by applying the reproduced temperature data to the phenological model. The DTS model was selected as the phenological model in the study, due to its superior performance on the three trees in South Korea compared to GDD and CD models. The FFD reproduction was similar to observation with slight margins of about 3 days, while preserving advantage of dynamical downscaling. The FFD reproduction tended to have high TCC with statistical significant at 95% confidence levels, and low RMSE. Consequently, the approach used in the study was regarded as an appropriate method to reproduce the fine-scale gridded temperature and FFDs with high accuracy.
Secondly, for predicting the upcoming FFD, long-range (1- to 3-month lead) prediction system with high spatial (3km) and temporal (daily) resolution was constructed by adopting a method combining dynamical downscaling and bias correction. For dynamical downscaling, the seasonal hindcasts on hourly basis for a period 10-year (1999-2008) was produced by PNU CGCM v1.1, and then used as initial and boundary conditions of WRF v3.0. Overall, the hindcast with correction well represented not only the general pattern of observation but also landform, as reproduction case. Thereafter, the regional FFD data (3km) in South Korea was predicted by applying the detailed daily hindcast to phenological model. Although FFDs were well predicted spatial distribution of observation, the FFD predictability is insufficient for accurate forecasting in quantitative and categorical estimations. Even though the upcoming flowering phenology could not be accurately predicted, this approach is worth in respect that the long-range prediction on FFD and regional temperature with high temporal (daily) and spatial (3km) resolution can be obtained.
Finally, for projecting the future change in flowering phenology, the FFD in South Korea was newly estimated using simulations obtained from six models of the CMIP5. For the study, daily temperature simulations with Historical (1986-2005), and RCP (2071-2090) 4.5 and 8.5 scenarios were statistically downscaled to 50 FFD observation sites over South Korea. Furthermore, in order to reduce uncertainties, multi-model ensemble (MME) was performed after bias correction. For estimating FFDs of three trees in South Korea, DTS model was applied to daily temperature simulations. In the analysis, mean temperatures for early spring (February to April) over South Korea in 2090 under RCP4.5 and 8.5 scenarios are expected to have increased by 2.0K and 3.5K, respectively. Consequently, the increased temperature for RCP4.5 and 8.5 scenarios accelerates the plant growth rate and thereby advances FFDcherry by 6.3 and 11.3, FFDpeach by 7.4 and 13.3 days and FFDpear by 6.5 and 11.3 days, respectively. It implies that the present flowering of cherry, peach and pear in the early or middle of April will have advanced to late March or early April by the end of this century. Therefore, the information on potential variation of flowering phenology related to future climate change could be effectively obtained.
Summing up these results, the diverse information (i.e., reproduction, seasonal prediction and future projection) on flowering date as well as regional temperature with high resolution in South Korea could be properly obtained using the climate and phenological models. However, the model outputs cannot exactly simulate the distribution and the lapse rate derived from in-situ observations. Ahn et al.(2012) presented similar results and gave two explanations. Firstly, the difference may be attributed to the inhomogeneous distribution of in-situ observation located mostly at relatively low altitude below mountain ridges. Secondly, the lapse rates over the leeward and windward sides can differ depending on the direction of winds to the ranges. Thus, the distribution and the lapse rate derived from in-situ observation in conjunction with simple interpolation method are difficult to represent topographical temperature variations. It shows needs to consider time-variant atmospheric dynamics.
The size of systematic bias was different between models or seasons, which caused under- or over-estimation of observed field. Therefore, proper statistical correction method taking various conditions (i.e., the kind of model and month) into consideration should be adopted. In three experiments, after systematic bias correction, the simulated temperature properly represented the complicated geographical features as well as the overall observation patterns. Our results demonstrate the importance of eliminating the systematic bias inherently contained in the model simulation results using the felicitous correction method.
Although this study only considered the effect of early spring temperature, the flowering phenology could be accurately estimated. It indicates that the FFDs of cherry, peach and pear in South Korea are closely related with early spring temperature among various meteorological variables. In other words, the FFDs of three trees can be properly estimated using only temperature data. Thus, the simple methods used in this study will be helpful to expand our understanding the FFD characteristics. Further application and physiological interpretation will provide more information about flowering phenology by applying DTS or more mechanistic phenology models to many plants and regions. Moreover, we believe that further studies on model improvement will provide more accurate information.
