This paper concerns consciousness and unconsciousness, both of which have been well-documented in multiple disciplines but far from reaching a consensus on some clear-cut definitions of ‘what they are.’ For instance, scientists analyze patients’ consciousness and unconsciousness and define their cases, whilst artists create works of art by analyzing the given objects from their inner perspectives. For what do multiple disciplines pay persistent attention to and delve into consciousness and unconsciousness? The way I as the author of this paper look at it, it is because everything from human emotions such as joy, sadness, surprise and distress to choices people make at each crossroad of life is attributed to both realms. Likewise, the very moment when one is forced into some introspection by an unusual incident may turn out to be a substantial event in his entire life,
According to Freud, upon encountering the self seated in unconsciousness in certain circumstances, one feels daunted and confused, which is linked to a doppleganger, meaning a person and his self in his unconsciousness look alike. Despite Freud’s assertion that people become fearful upon encountering their dopplegangers, not all feel daunted in the sense that the process of experiencing a sense of revulsion is abstract.
Hence, this study uses a digital process to visually represent the abstract process of the encounter between consciousness and unconsciousness with intent to ascertain if one feels daunted by the encounter with the visually represented coexistence of consciousness and unconsciousness.
Masks are used to represent the selves in consciousness and unconsciousness, whilst wearing the masks repetitively represents the continuous interactions occurring in the realm of human mind. Also, the stepwise progress of the digital process generates unintended interim outcomes such as glitches and third images, which serve as visual fun factors freshening up the atmosphere.
The act of repetitively wearing and removing the masks represents the action of consciousness, whilst stretched masks are indicative of endless interactions between consciousness and unconsciousness. Also, the work on “an encounter between ‘myself’ and ‘myself a’” casts light on a symmetric existence of consciousness and unconsciousness with the blurred boundary of the symmetry developing into their coexistence. Moreover, the proposed process highlights diverse emotions as well as the uncanniness resulting from the boundary between an uncertain agent and a doppleganger.
In conclusion, the visualized digital process representing the encounter between consciousness and unconsciousness is conducive to confronting a doppleganger in the hope of finding one’s hidden double instead of any ominous and daunting feeling relevant to das Unheimliche.
