This study aims to offer a preliminary study of programs for practical use in the field of early childhood education by experimenting the effects of Korean traditional music education on young children's Korean musical abilities and motor skill.
For this purpose of the research, the following study subjects are established;
1. What are the effects of Korean traditional music education on young children's Korean musical ability?
2. What are the effects of Korean traditional music education on young children's motor skill?
The subjects of this research are 50 young children of two classes whose ages are 5 years in full. They are young children of the kindergarten attached to the " G Elementary School" which located in Go chang, Jeonbuk. For these two classes, the total 50 young children are randomly assigned to the one experimental group(25) and the other comparative group(25). As a result of pretest of mean age, young children's Korean traditional musical abilities and motor skills with the experimental and comparative groups, there is no significant difference between both groups, so these groups are assumed to be homogeneous groups.
In this research, for measuring young children's Korean musical ability, "the Test of Korean musical ability" which is based on the instrument of Korean Institute of Curriculum and Evaluation(1998), developed by Lee, Sun Lae(2003), was re-recorded and used for both the pre-post tests, and for measuring young children's motor skill, the instrument by Lim, Sook Hee(2003) -divided into the basic movement skill test and the perceptual-motor skill test -was used for each test. The experimental treatment was conducted 15 times in total for 5 weeks, in proportion of three times a week; the experimental group which conducted Korean traditional music class in person on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and the comparative group which conducted general music class by comparative group teacher on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Analysis of the data collected before and after tests is performed by t-test using SAS program to examine the Korean traditional music education's effects on young children's Korean musical ability and motor skill.
The results of this research are as follows.
First, it is found that experimental group which conducted Korean traditional music class showed significantly higher improvement in Korean musical ability than comparative group which did general music class. As for the sub-factors of young children's Korean musical ability, comprehension, expression and appreciation, it appears that experimental group which conducted Korean traditional music class showed significantly higher improvement than comparative group which did general music class.
Second, it is found that experimental group which conducted Korean traditional music class showed statistically higher improvement in young children's motor skill than comparative group which did general music class. As for the sub-factors of young children's motor skill- moving movement ability, non-moving movement ability and operating movement ability of the basic movement skill, and body-perception, space-perception, direction-perception, and time-perception ability of perceptual motor skill- it appears that experimental group which conducted Korean traditional music class showed significantly higher improvement than comparative group which did general music class.
In conclusion, Korean traditional music education is more effective than general music education in improving young children's Korean musical ability and motor skill. Therefore, if the Korean traditional music education is applied to the field of early childhood education, it has effects on the improvement of young children's Korean musicality and motor skill. The results of this study suggest that Korean traditional music education offers a preliminary study as a thesis of young children activities for practical use in the field of early childhood education.
