This study investigates the role of foreign language aptitude in different proficiency levels of Chinese college EFL learners’ vocabulary breadth and depth. Specifically, the study focused on three main questions. The first question investigates different proficiency levels of Chinese EFL learners’ performances on language aptitude, vocabulary breadth, and vocabulary depth. The second question examines the relationships between aptitude and vocabulary breadth and depth based on two proficiency groups. The third question seeks a more comprehensive interpretation of how the subdivided aptitudes function in affecting learners’ L2 vocabulary knowledge. To this end, sixty Chinese college-level learners were divided into two proficiency groups of high and low based on their English test scores for the Chinese College English Test. They were asked to complete three online-drive tests: the Vocabulary Levels Test (VLT), the Word Associates Test (WAT), and the LLAMA test for language aptitude in sequence. The results of all the above tests were analyzed by descriptive statistical analysis, t-test analysis, Pearson correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis. Participants’ performances on language aptitude, vocabulary breadth, and vocabulary depth were directly compared to see whether EFL learners with two L2 proficiency levels appear differently in vocabulary breadth and depth and L2 aptitude. The correlations between aptitude and vocabulary breadth and depth from the two proficiency groups were examined by comparing their scores on the LLAMA test and VLT, as well as their final valid responses in the WAT. Additionally, three subdivided aptitudes (i.e., rote memory, phonetic coding ability, and grammatical sensitivity) were analyzed to explore their predictive roles in distinct L2 proficiency groups' vocabulary breadth and depth.
The results showed that participants in the two proficiency groups differed significantly. High-proficiency (HP) learners outperformed low proficiency (LP) learners in both overall language aptitude and three subdivided aptitudes. HP also had a larger vocabulary size in the overall vocabulary breadth test and within each frequency level test than LP. The results indicate that L2 proficiency is significantly and positively related to one’s performance on language aptitude and vocabulary knowledge. Additionally, HP produced more valid paradigmatic associations than LP, which is consistent with the claim that vocabulary depth developed with a more paradigmatic tendency when learners’ L2 proficiency increased. However, no difference was found based on the two proficiency group’s answers on syntagmatic association during the vocabulary depth test. This may indicate that syntagmatic association continues to pose a challenge for L2 learners despite their development in proficiency. Also, there is a possibility that syntagmatic association is generally created when learners encounter less frequent words since these words tend to occur in a more constrained context. No significant difference was also found in the phonological association, which may indicate that L2 adult learners’ response is rarely based on phonological association.
The overall aptitude had a strong relationship with vocabulary breadth and depth in LP learners. However, this relationship was not be found in HP learners. This result was consistent with the previous studies in that LP learners may significantly rely on their L2 aptitude when learning vocabulary. It also supports the view that the aptitude of high-proficiency learners may not have a significant role, and possibly mediated by other factors such as strategy use and motivation that need to be tested in the future studies.
Rote memory strongly contributed to the overall vocabulary breadth and each frequency level test in LP learners, which is consistent with the previous studies in that stronger rote memory results in large vocabulary. Although the correlation with rote memory was found at the 1000 and 5000 levels in HP, the role of rote memory is still unclear. Since there was no positive variance in the 2000-4000 level range in HP, it is possible that additional abilities will be required as L2 proficiency and vocabulary size increases. To sum up, in both proficiency groups, rote memory contributed mostly to the highest frequency words at the 1000 level. In terms of vocabulary depth, rote memory was significantly correlated with vocabulary depth in LP but not in HP. LP’ rote memory was also positively correlated with valid numbers of the answers on paradigmatic and syntagmatic associations and negatively correlated with the non-related association. According to earlier research, one possibility could be that L2 learners in LP with strong rote memory are better able to form more word associations (i.e., the largest proportion for paradigmatic followed by syntagmatic and non-related for the least ). Compared to rote memory, the functions of grammatical sensitivity and phonetic coding ability were much slight. Their contributions were only found at the first 2000 levels and the 5000 level in LP respectively, suggesting that future studies need to further examine their exact influences via increasing frequency ratings for word tests. Additionally, no direct contribution was found in both LP and HP’s vocabulary depth. It is possible that learners inactivated grammatical sensitivity and phonetic coding ability during the vocabulary depth test.
