가변형 가구디자인에 관한 연구 : 의자디자인을 중심으로 = (A) study on shape-changeable furniture design : focused on chair design

국문 초록 (Abstract)

인류는 주거공간과 함께 각기 다른 기능을 지닌 가구를 공간에 배치하여 사용해왔다. 이들 기능의 차이점은 사용목적에 따라 구별 되며 실내공간의 구성과 사용자 행위의 필요성에 의해서 특징지어 진다. 이러한 각기 다른 기능을 가진 가구들은 오랫동안 변함 없는 모습과 함께 주로 고정된 위치에서 사용되어왔다. 그러나 인류의 생활상은 여러 주변요인에 의해 변화의 모습을 보이면서 조금씩 가구에서도 새로운 모습이 나타나기 시작하였다.
구조의 움직임을 통해 다양한 기능을 동시에 지닐 수 있는 형태가 변하는 특성을 가진 가변형 가구가 등장하게 되는데, 고정식 가구와 달리 유동적인 움직임과 다양한 기능을 동시에 소화할 수 있는 특성을 가지고 있다. 이러한 가변형 가구는 특별한 생활환경 조건에서 사용하기 시작하면서 실질적 필요성에 의해 등장하게 되었다. 이러한 특성을 지닌 가변형 가구 중 가변형 의자는 인체와 밀접한 관계를 가지고 있기 때문에 좀 더 복잡하고 특별한 성격을 띄고 있으며, 사용목적에 있어서 많은 차이점을 가지고 있다.
본 연구의 목적은 역사적 사실을 토대로 나타난 사례들을 중심으로 전개하였는데, 먼저 가변형 의자를 근대 이후부터 현재까지 각 시대별로 살펴보면서 등장배경을 분석하고, 각 시대에 나타난 사례들의 디자인 특징을 가변형식 중심으로 분석하여 가변형 의자의 디자인의 가치와 의의를 찾고, 더불어서 앞으로 가변형 의자의 활용가능성을 찾고자하는데 목적이 있다.
그리고 본 연구의 시대범위는 근대부터 현재까지 가변형 의자가 두드러지게 나타난 시기를 1920년대와 1930년대, 1960년대와 1970년대, 1980년대 그리고 1990년대와 현재로 크게 분류하였다. 또한 가변형 의자는 사용목적에 따라 광범위하게 사용되는데 본 연구의 대상범위는 변형 전후에 가구로서 기능이 가능한 가변형 의자를 중심으로 전개하였다.
가변형 의자의 등장은 제1차 세계대전 이후에 나타난 주택문제해결을 위한 공동주택의 실내공간에서 나타나기 시작하였다. 실생활 의 변화와 요구에 대한 문제해결로 다목적 기능을 가진 변형이 가능한 가구를 당시의 근대기능주의자를 중심으로 제시되었는데, 특히 사회개혁을 이루는 과도기 상태에 있는 러시아에서도 동일한 주택문제를 가지고 있었으며 구성주의자의 적극적 활동으로 다목적 기능을 가진 변형이 가능한 가구들을 디자인하였다.
그리고 60, 70년대에 이태리를 중심으로 나타난 혁신적인 의자디자인은 당시 발전된 기술과 신 재료 등의 적용으로 새로운 개념의 가변형 의자들이 등장하였으며 젊은 소비층과 팝(Pop) 문화를 배경으로 급속히 전개되어 새로운 생활의 변화를 추구하였다. 특히 조 콜롬보(Joe Colombo)와 같은 디자이너는 새로운 생활공간의 개념인 가변공간을 제시하고 이에 따른 다기능을 가진 다수의 가변형 의자를 디자인하였다.
80년대 초에는 꾸준한 연구와 개발로 도시유끼 기타(Toshiyuki Kita)가 디자인한 윙크(Wink)와 같은 메커니즘을 이용한 성숙된 가변형 의자가 등장하였다. 또한 기능성을 중시하는 디자인으로서 일반적 가변형식을 가진 가변형 의자는 기계적 모습의 조형미와 함께 실용적 디자인으로 사용되어졌으나, 예술적 경향의 작품을 추구하는 개인주의 디자이너인 론 아라드(Ron Arad), 긴반데(Ginbande)와 같은 디자이너들에 의해 다기능, 형태변화의 개념을 가진 가변형 의자를 예술적이고 실험적인 디자인으로 접근하였다.
90년대에 접어들면서 다양한 기술과 새로운 재료의 적용으로 더욱 활발히 전개되었으며, 사용목적과 사용대상층은 특수성에서 벗어나 일반화되고 확대되었다. 또한 현대에는 미래상을 제시하는 생활공간에 적용되는 의자로서 융통성 있게 대응할 수 있는 가변형 디자인을 제시하기도 하였다.
결과적으로 의미 있는 가변형 의자의 등장은 변화하는 생활공간과 사용자의 행위의 필요에 의해 적용되었는데, 이러한 가변형 의자의 특징을 다각적인 측면을 고려해 살펴보면 다음과 같다.
첫째, 사회적 측면에서 변화하는 생할공간에 적응할 수 있는 적응능력을 가지고 있다.
둘째, 기능적 측면에서 다용도로 사용할 수 있고 인체의 자세변화에도 즉흥적으로 반응할 수 있는 특징을 가지고 있다.
셋째, 구조적 측면에서 접이식(掘易式), 조합식(組合式), 일체식(一體式) 그리고 축적식(築積式) 등 다양한 가변형식을 가지고 있으며, 이러한 형식들은 발전된 기술과 새로운 재료와 밀접한 관계를 가지고 있다.
넷째, 조형적 측면에서 합리적 기능성을 강조한 기계적 미학뿐만 아니라 창조적인 디자인으로서의 독특한 조형미를 나타낸다.
살펴본 가변형 의자에 나타난 특징들은 앞으로 다가올 변화에 유연하게 적응할 수 있는 특성과 이를 가능하게 하는 다양한 가변형 식으로 활용가능성을 높게 가지고 있으며 특별한 생활환경변화에 맞게 사용할 수 있는 디자인으로 평가된다. 가변형 의자디자인은 앞으로 21세기 미래생활상에 필요로 하는 기능을 가진 가구로서 역할을 할 것이며, 새로운 디자인접근법으로 적용될 것이다.

Human race have used furniture inside his living space with various use purposes.
The functional differences are divided by the furniture's use purposes and characterized by users' needs and inside structures. The furniture that have respectively different functions have been used at the same fixed-locations with also the same shapes. However, aspects of human life are changing according to changing surroundings, and the furniture is also showing new shapes.
The most noticeably new aspect is the advent of shape-changeable furniture that have changing structure and various functions accordingly. The representative character of these shape-changeable furniture is that they have both mobility and functional diversity at the same time, which are different features from fixed furniture.
These shape-changeable furniture started to be used under particular living environments, and more practical necessities made people invent this kind of furniture. Many kinds of furniture have changeable shapes, in particular, chair has the most special and complicated characters because it is closely related with human body and has many Special and different purposes when it is made.
The purposes of this study are introduced based on historical facts. Above all, shape-changeable chairs are examined according to times from the modern ages to this contemporary ages, its advent background was analyzed, design features are also analyzed with concrete examples of each age, focused on shape-changeable chair, value and significance of shape-changeable chair is searched for, additionally, the application-possibility of shape-changeable chair is researched.
This study was conducted with the historical background from the modern ages to this contemporary ages; the whole ages are divided into the 1920's·1930'S, 1960'S·1970's, 1980'S and 1990' S' S·The present time, which periods of time indicate those when the shape-changeable chairs were used noticeably and widely, Shape-changeable chair is widely used according to application purposes, the range of this study's objects is the chairs whose shapes can be used as a useful furniture before and after they are changed.
The shape-changeable chairs appeared after the World War I, and it firstly appeared inside apartment houses that were built to settle serious housing problems. Modern Functionalists of at that time suggested the original idea of shape-changeable furniture that achieves practical and different purposes in real life according as generations and actual life conditions change, In particular, Russia that was in the middle of a transitional epoch had the same housing problems. And Constructivist began to design shape-changeable furniture that have multi-functions.
In the 1960's and 1970's, Italian designers showed a renovational chair design to prove advanced skills and new materials of at that time, which produced a new conception of shape-changeable chair, This new conception rapidly spread into young consumers under the Pop culture, then, led to new type of life. Joe Colombo proposed a new conception of changeable space, one of the conceptions of living space, and designed various shape-changeable chairs that function in many ways.
In the early 80's, continual research activities and developmental purports enabled Toshiyuki Kita to design 'Wink' that made use of mechanism, a very advanced shape-changeable chair, Ordinary shape-changeable chairs that pursued Functionalism only began to demand a modeling beauty as well as utility, Modern designers of Individualism such as Ron Arad and Ginbande pursued artistic and experimental trends instead of function-centric designs in shape-changeable chair design.
In the 90's, more various techniques and various materials began to be used, accordingly, the use purposes and the range of users expanded more. In theses days, new designs of shape-changeable chair are being suggested to introduce new future life and adapt to the new life style.
As a result, this significant introduction of shape-changeable chair was done to meet changing living environmental conditions and users' needs. And the main features of shape-changeable chair are calculated as follows, with a multi-sided consideration.
First, this new conception means an adaptability to changing living conditions in the social side.
Second, people can use this shape-changeable chair for many functional aims, in other words, this chair promptly change its shape according to changes of human body's posture.
Third, from the structural viewpoint, the different shapes that shape-changeable chair are folding mode, compounding mode, united mode, and stacking mode. These different modes are closely related with advanced techniques and new materials.
Fourth, from the formative-artistic viewpoint, the shape-changeable chair shows not only mechanical beauty emphasizing rationalism and functionalism but also unique formative-artistic beauty with a creative design.
These features that the Shape-Changeable chair have could meet other changes to come in the future, and its flexible shapes would help people flexibly adapt themselves to new changes. Therefore, it is thought that the designs for Shape-Changeable chair must consider particular environmental changes in daily life. The Shape-Changeable chairs will have new functions that modern people require in the 21st century, and new designs and new techniques will be invented by researchers in the future continually.
