As the number of women who work because of changed social structures, desires of their participation and improved living standards is increasing, employment of the married women is increasing.
Women have jobs voluntarily or inevitably for their self-realization, financial affluence or because of living conditions, but they feel how difficult they harmonize work with family affairs. Of course, because of nuclear-family structures or changed minds on family structures, more men help household chores for their wives. Also because of convenience of civilization, they can minimize the time for household, but they have to allocate their much time to bringing up their children like women who do not work. So, bringing up of children is considered as a traditional role of women.
Individuals, society and the country should be responsible for nursing heroes of future society, make every effort to provide quantitative and qualitative nursing service and effective and multi-aspects research on nursing of increasing working mothers.
This study selects nursing types which occupy the largest part of grandparents' bringing-up and interviews them. It is to identify the general status of problems which are found when working mothers take over nursing of their children to their parents based on the results obtained.
The results of the analysis on proxy bringing-up of children by grandparents are summarized as follows:
First, the types of proxy bringing-up by grandparents are roughly categorized into living together and non-living together, but more specifically, it is divided into taking children to grandparents' houses by working mother everyday, grandmothers' visiting children's houses for nursing everyday and living together with grandparents except the weekends.
Second, the advantages of grandparents' bringing-up are as follows: ⅰ) It is safe and trusting. ⅱ) Children are loved enough by grandparents. ⅲ) Working mothers can work comfortably. ⅳ) Children can eat enough and have good health.
Disadvantages are as follows: ⅰ) Children are spoiled because grandparent give too much care. ⅱ) Mothers' opinion is not reflected. ⅲ) No education is given.
ⅳ) Grandparents are unfair in treating female children compared with male ones.
Third, it is found that expense of nursing by grandparents includes allowances.
The rest of the subjects except two cases pay 300,000 won, 800,000 and even 1,000,000 to grandparents. In addition to nursing expense, when children live together in grandparents' houses, working mothers pay for living expense or they pay extra monetary expenses. However, part of the money is returned to children in some cases.
Fourth, husbands' thought about nursing by grandparents are very active. The participation of husbands in nursing is very insignificant like helping simple household chores or playing with children for such a short time. Still, mothers decide most of the children's education. Korean husbands are passive in nursing of children.
Based on the results of the study, this study is to present suggestive plans as follows:
First, working mothers want facilities for children within or near their working places.
Second, some of the working mothers may have jobs for self-realization or satisfaction, , but many of them work for living. So, working mothers want to support nursing expense from the government and no-charged nursing should be expanded.
Third, working mothers want co-workers to change their mind on nursing and to have suspension from office for nursing. Suspension from office for nursing is recommendable, but the period should be expanded from three months to four or five months.
Working mother think that the policy of the government is not actually helpful at all. Therefore, the government provide institutional support by identifying problems on bringing-up by working mothers and what they want exactly so that working mothers can have more benefits.
