This study purposed to examine the effects of nursery teachers’ teacher efficacy on teacher‐infant interaction and analyze its relation with teacher‐infant interaction, and by doing so, to determine difference in teacher‐infant interaction according to teacher efficacy. The results of this study are expected to help us understand the characteristics of nursery teachers and provide useful information for augmenting individual nursery teachers’ competence and for developing effective education programs.
For these purposes, we set research questions as follows.
1. What difference is there in teacher‐infant interaction according to socio‐ demographic characteristics?
1) What difference is there in teacher‐infant interaction for daily nursing according to socio‐demographic characteristics?
2) What difference is there in teachers’ teacher‐infant interaction according to socio ‐demographic characteristics?
2. What relations are there between teacher efficacy, and daily nursing interaction and teacher’s interaction?
3. What effect does teacher efficacy have on teacher‐infant interaction?
The subjects of this study were nursery teachers working at national, public, corporate and private childcare facilities in K City, Gyeongsangbuk‐do. For this study, we sampled 300 nursery teachers in charge of infants (age between 0‐2) through random sampling, and surveyed them using a questionnaire. A total of 223 questionnaires were used in the analysis.
Teacher efficacy was measured using the teacher efficacy scale developed by Kim Ah‐yeong (1997). This scale consists of three sub‐scales confidence, self‐control, challenge, and a total of 24 questions including 7 on confidence, 11 on self‐control and 6 on challenge. Teacher‐infant interaction was measured with an instrument that we formulated using the results of factor analysis with questions on interaction extracted from the Childcare Center Accreditation Assistance Guidance Program published by the Central Childcare Information Center.
The results of this study are summarized as follows.
First, in the results of examining difference in teacher‐infant interaction according to nursery teachers’ socio‐demographic characteristics, statistically significant difference was observed according to organization type, age, marital status and work experience. According to academic qualification, daily nursing interaction was different but teacher’s interaction was not different. In addition, the yearly length of training did not make any significant difference in teacher‐infant interaction. This means that the quality of teacher‐infant interaction is affected by organization type and it is higher when the nursery teachers are old, married, and experienced, but is not different according to the yearly length of training. Therefore, it is necessary to plan and execute systematic high‐quality training programs that may be helpful in the field of childcare and directly applicable by nursery teachers to infants and toddlers. Furthermore, consideration should be given to substantial financial support for the expenses of training.
Second, teacher efficacy was in a significant positive correlation with daily nursing interaction and teacher’s teacher‐infant interaction. That is, when confidence, one of the sub‐factors of teacher efficacy, was high, daily nursing interaction and teacher’s interaction were made more smoothly, and when self‐control was high, daily interaction and teacher’s interaction were made more smoothly. In addition, when challenge, another sub‐factor of teacher efficacy, was high, daily nursing interaction and teacher’s interaction were made more smoothly.
This means that the higher personal teacher efficacy was the higher interaction for daily nursing and teacher’s interaction were. This result suggests that nursery teachers’ teacher efficacy is closely related with teacher‐infant interaction.
Third, among the sub‐factors of teacher efficacy, self‐control was found to have a significant effect on daily nursing interaction and teacher’s interaction. That is, the higher personal teacher efficacy the higher teacher‐infant interaction was. These results mean that when teachers have high confidence in self‐efficacy, high self‐control, and high challenge, they are more influential on teacher‐infant interaction.
