고구려 樹下人物圖像의 함의 고찰 = Exploration on the Meanings of the Figures-under-a Tree Motif from Goguryeo

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This article focuses on the fact that the paintings commonly referred to as the figures-under-a tree motif (樹下人物圖像), which is composed of trees and people, are drawn as motifs on the walls of the coffin rooms in the ancient tombs in Deokheung-ri, Gakjeochong, and Muyongchong, a wall of the first room of the tomb number one in Jangchuan, as well as and on its the ceiling. In the 5th century Goguryeo mural paintings, which were in the living and cultural genre, were mainly focused on the life and culture of the tomb owners. The murals had relatively distinctive contents on different parts of the rooms in tombs: The paintings on the walls of tombs meant the life on Earth, and the paintings on the ceiling meant the life in heaven. Therefore, by reviewing the drawings on the murals of the walls and the ceilings, I can go one step closer to understanding the religious and afterlife view of the people in Goguryeo. In order to review the meaning and characteristics of the figures-under-a tree motif from Goguryeo, I looked at the components of Goguryeo's figures-under-a tree motif and their positions on screen in chapter II. In chapter III, I looked at the characteristics of trees in the figures-under-a tree motif of Goguryeo and the cultural regions which were formed before it to examine the role of the cosmic tree (宇宙樹) and the tree of life (生命樹) in the overall paintings. In chapter IV, I deduced the universal characteristics and distinct characteristics of the figures-under-a tree motif from Goguryeo. The characteristics, which were drawn were: the composition of the figures-under-a tree motif with hunting scenes and the Buddhist view in the figures-under-a tree image.
