    Recently, the rapid improvement of ICT(Information and Communications, Technologies) has created a new value through a convergence with other technologies and industries. Particularly, 4G(Generation) LTE(Long Term Evolution) has made it possible to transmit data at high speeds. This has changed the industry’s environment completely. All the while, a wireless communication system in the railway industry has been limited to a voice service only because of the low transmission speed of the system. Moreover, there are many problems with the voice service, like limited service coverage, noise and inefficiency in operations within a wireless communication system.
    This system desperately needs improvement and must meet customer needs in railway services. The emergence of 4G LTE technology make it possible to solve many problems within this industry. LTE-R(Long Term Evolution-Railway) is a new wireless communication technology that uses 4G LTE.
    The LTE-R system can provide stable high-speed data transmission; therefore it is possible to impact the industry market and provide multimedia service for customers who are using the railway. In this study, I aim to prove that LTE-R’s optimization and application for domestic and foreign railway systems is a sound investment and will improve the railway industry dramatically.
    For this, I investigated the current situation of wireless communication systems of Korea’s railway.
