묘족복식의 자수문양을 활용한 디자인 개발 = Design Developement using Embroidery Patterns in Miao Dress

Chinese Miao nationality is a major member of China’s 56 ethnic groups. It has a history to be counted in thousand years, over which splendid civilization has been cultivated. Miao embroidery is one of them. As one of Chinese traditional embroidery types, Miao embroidery is distinctive and unique. The use of colors follows intuition and the pattern is infused with imagination. The importance of Miao embroidery does not only lie in the fact that it is an indispensable element in the apparel of Miao. As Miao nationality has no written script, their embroidery was used to record their history. Therefore, understanding Miao embroidery is crucial to understanding Miao history. Unfortunately, the culture of Miao nationality, the meanings and the values of Miao embroidery has been so far neglected by many, and the preservation and further development of Miao embroidery has been challenged.
In order to systematically reveal Miao culture and to preserve the non-material cultural heritage, the author redesigned Miao embroidery and incorporated it into modern fashion, in the hope that when the embroidery is marketized, it can become a sustainable resource. The work presented here conducted a comprehensive and in-depth research into the culture of Miao, through means of literatures study, in situ investigations, etc. This paper focused on the characteristics of the embroidery in woman’s wear in Miao nationality and discovered the value of Miao embroidery in current fashion design.
Miao embroidery techniques is complicated and varied, many of which has fixed processes following the traditional way. This feature has made mass production and sale difficult. Another challenge is that according the present aesthetic standard many patterns in Miao embroidery is either too bright in color or outmoded in design. To re-exhibit the aesthetic values in Miao embroidery, its techniques has to be simplified and its patterns has to be improved. After examining the historical background of Miao embroidery, its primary embroidery techniques, the characteristics of its patterns and the corresponding implications, and the coordination and interaction of colors, the artistic value of Miao embroidery has been highlighted and a design has been formulated. The study shows that the elements in Miao embroidery can be incorporated with modern elements to be blended into modern jewelry design.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구의 목적은 묘족 복식 중 묘족 자수 문양을 기초로 연구하여 이에 내재적인 가치를 이해한 후에 현대적인 시대의 배경과 결합시켜 디자인 제안을 하고자 한다.
본 연구는 묘족 여성의 복식에 관한 자료 중에서 묘족 자수를 기록한 문헌, 저널에 실린 논문 또는 현지 조사 등의 방법을 이용하여 얻은 자료를 통해 묘족 자수가 가지고 있는 내재적인 가치와 디자인상의 특수성을 탐구하고 분석하였다.
본 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다. 묘족의 자수예술은 현실적인 삶과 밀접한 관계가 있으며 이는 묘족 사람들이 원시적인 예술을 생산 활동 또는 삶의 장면들과 일체화시킨 표현이다. 이와 같은 소중한 자료들은 디자인을 하는 데에 있어서 새로운 시각적인 관점과 디자인의 사고방식을 제공해주고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 또한 묘족 자수가 현 시대에도 의미를 가지고 있다는 사실을 알 수 있었다.
첫째, 묘족 자수는 옷의 각 부위, 옷깃, 소매, 바지자락, 치마 밑단부분 등 에서 볼 수 있다. 이는 생활하며 쉽게 헤어지고 닳는 의복의 가장자리 부분에 자수를 이용하여 장식하고 보호함으로써 실용성과 장식성을 하나로 융합시키고 있다. 또한, 복식의 실용성과 정신적인 심미적 기능을 결합시켜서 만든 일종의 심미적 측면의 창조라고도 볼 수 있다. 묘족 자수는 묘족의 역사, 문화, 예술, 신앙을 재현시킨 것이다. 이런 정신적인 가치를 보유하여 향후의 디자인 속에서 전통성을 현대적인 디자인 작품에 부여함으로써 작품이 풍부한 내용을 갖도록 해줄 것이다.
둘째, 묘족자수의 스타일은 단순, 소박하며 때때로 순진함과 낭만적인 분위기를 연출하기도 한다. 묘족자수가 추구하는 것은 현실을 초월한 상징적인 구상방법인데 전통적인 예술의 스타일을 가지고 있을 뿐만 아니라 다양하고 융통성이 있는 표현 수단도 동시에 가지고 있다. 구조 자체를 무시하고 투시법(透视法, Perspective)을 따지지도 않으며 심지어 비례와 현실 상황도 고려하지 않는다. 형체를 강조하지 않고 사물에 대한 논리를 따지지도 않으며 묘족 사람들의 아름다운 소원과 환상에만 근거해서 자유롭게 창작하고 과감하게 창의성을 발휘시킨 것이다.
셋째, 묘족자수에서는 생명이 있는 동·식물부터 무생물체인 강가의 모래, 조약돌 등을 모두 표현의 대상으로 삼아 광범위하게 연구 하였다. 전반적으로 묘족민족은 동물을 숭배하는 민족의식이 강했기 때문에 동물을 그려 놓은 도안이 묘족 자수의 대부분을 차지하고 있다. 이런 도안의 스타일은 과장되고 생생하며 뚜렷한 예술적인 분위기를 풍기고 있다. 그래서 묘족자수는 우리가 디자인을 할 때 사고의 폭을 넓혀주는 역할을 해주며 쉽게 얻을 수 없는 교과서가 될 수 있다.
묘족 자수예술의 표현방법은 매우 직접적이고 생생하며 자연 자체가 가지고 있는 이미지에 국한되어 있지 않는다. 예를 들어 묘족 여성들은 심미성의 표현으로 나비의 날개를 조류의 몸에다 그려놓기도 하고 호랑이 몸통에는 물고기의 비늘이 나타나는 표현들을 사용한다. 비합리적으로 보일 수 있지만 원시부터 내려오는 이러한 표현방법은 결국에 적합한 예술적 이미지를 창출해 냈다. 이는 우리가 단편적인 사유에서 벗어날 수 있도록 도와주는 역할을 하고 디자인을 하는 과정에서 과감한 상상력을 제안함으로써 디자인에 활용시킬 수 있는 풍부한 아이디어를 제공해 줄 수 있다.
