조선후기 소품문에 대한 정치사회학적 고찰 = Sop'um in the Political and Social Contexts of the Late Chosŏn Period

This article reconsiders the emergence and development of sop’um(a form of short essay) in the late Chosŏn period by placing them in their political and social contexts. Existing studies on sop’um tend to focus on individual writers and their works within the context of Korean literary history, or on the influence of the Ming and Qing Chinese literatures. As a result of confining their investigation to the literary realm, however, most scholars have neglected the question of how sop’um can be placed in the broader social and historical contexts of the times, and what circumstances specific to the late Chosŏn period stimulated the trans formation of sop’um as a literary genre.
Against this background, the present article makes three points: first, factional divisions and stratifications of literati in the late Chosŏn period produced a new group of monadic individual writers who were estranged from the existing communities of literati, and therefore whose positions in the politico-social constellation became dim. Second, the representa tive writers of sop’um such as Yu Man-ju 兪晩柱(1755-1788), Yi Ok 李鈺(1760-1815), Sim No-sung 沈魯崇(1762-1837) and Kim Ryŏ 金鑢(1766- 1822) turned to sop’um, instead of komun (ancient writing style), for the expression of their sensitivities as individual beings. Third, the popula rity of sop’um and the intellectual movement for Practical Learning(sirak 實學) that emerged among the literati in Seoul and its precincts in the late Chosŏn period were not unrelated phenomena, but should be con sidered two faces of the same coin, i.e., the literati’s intellectual and cultural responses to the political and social trans formation of Chosŏn society.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본고는 조선후기 소품문의 발생과 전개에 대한 정치사회학적 고찰을 시도하였다. 소품문에 대한 그간의 연구는 문학사 내부의 맥락에 주목하여 소품문 작가와 작품에 관한 개별적 분석 그리고 명청문단의 영향이라는 두 측면에서 상당한 성과를 거두었다. 이에 반해 문학사를 당대 사회역사와의 거시적 관련 속에서 이해하고, 소품문이라는 문체상의 변화를 추동한 조선후기 시공간적 상황이 과연 무엇이었는지를 고찰하는 데에는 미진한 면이 없지 않았다.
이에 본고는 조선후기 당파의 분열과 사족층의 계층 분화가 정치사회적 좌표값이 모호하고 기존 사대부 공동체로부터 단자화된 ‘개별자’를 출현시켰다는 점, 소품문 핵심 작가인 兪晩柱(1755-1788), 李鈺(1760-1815), 沈魯崇(1762-1837), 金鑢(1766-1822)가 지닌 ‘개별자로서 감수성’은 주제․소재․형식․표현의 측면에서 볼 때 고문보다는 소품문의 글쓰기에 적합하다는 점, 나아가 재경․근기 사족을 중심으로 일어난 실학적 움직임과 소품문의 글쓰기가 상호 별개의 사안이 아니라 당대 정치사회의 변동과 밀접히 연계된 지적․문화적 대응의 兩面이라는 점을 논구하였다.
