      The Prose style of a literary sketch(小品體) is characterized by a literary sketch with a new and fresh style. That is, it is a kind of prose which delicate sentiments and miscellaneous themes are expressed in. this prose style was mainly led by the Kung-an School(公安派) at the close of Ming(明) dynasty. The representative writers who used this prose style freely Korea were Park Chi-weon(朴趾源),Lee Teok-moo(李德懋),and Park Che-ga(朴齊家),Lee Ok(李鈺),Kim Lyeo(김례),and so on. They had an anti-classical literary view in commom. In addition, with the acceptance of the literary view of the Kung-an school(公安派) and the Ching-ling School (竟陵派) that took the leadership in writing a literary sketch at the close of Ming(明 )and in the biginning of Ch'ing(淸) dynasty, they stirred up a new sprit in the literature of those days through outstanding lyrical mood and the command of up-to-date words
      The representative response to the prose style of a literary sketch at that time is described as the movement toward an ancient style(文體反正).Through the movement the prose style became the object of an important. issue in literary dispute in the later period of Choseon(朝鮮) dynasty. However, studies on the literature of ,this period have been concentrated on novels only as yet. On the contrary, studies on the prose style of a literary sketch have been disregarded.
      This study is aimed at the prose style of a literary sketch that had an important effect on the development of Korean literature on Chinese style in the later period of Chosoen(朝鮮) dynasty, but was ignored owing to making much of the novel.
      The results of this study are as follows:
      First, the prose style reflects not only the social change that represents a great commotion against the system of status in the later period of Choseon(朝鮮) dynasty, but. also the ideological change that represents the pluralism I of thinking structure. In terms of intrinsic aspects of literature, this prose style was greatly affected by the Kung-an School(公安派) from China as well as inherited the anti-classical literary view of the later period of Choseon(朝鮮) dynasty.
      Secondly, the prose style is not quite a new style. It is just the orthodox prose - a preface(序),a narrative(記,),an epistle(書) - changed in quality by differrentiating the literary aim from that. of the previous times, As a result, the literary works have a tendency to attach importance to an individual experience and the inner world. These kinds of works are travel sketches, diaries and essays.
      Thirdly, the prose style frequently uses the technique of a fable and satire, and takes advantage of the rhetorical device which makes the point of an argument clear in the form of questions and answers. Especially a pictorial description such as perspective representation stands out conspicuously.
      Fourthly, the prose style excludes the academic theory of literature. In the light of thought, it verges on Taoism and Buddism, and is characterized by a unconstrained style. In linguistic usages, it mainly concerns the creation of new phrases, avoiding an authentic precedent as far as possible.
      Fifthly, writers of the prose style seema to have come to an agreement on the necessity of the identity of written and spoken language. As a result, usages of simplified Chinese characters and colloquial expressions stand out conspicuously as well.
      Sixthly, the response to the prose style at that time is described as the movement toward an ancient style(文體反正). The view of literary sketch in this course was greatly affected by the reviews related to the literary sketch in Four treasuries(四庫全書).On the other hand, the prose style was rejected as a futile argument because of the recognition that foreign thought like Catholism was spread out by means of it in particular.
      From the standpoint of this study, it can be concluded that actually modern literature in Korea has begun to develop with the prose style of a literary sketch, and this prose style pioneered the way to modern miscellaneous literature in terms of genre. However, there remains that the further study is to consider how a modern literary point of view and a literary style are closely connected with the literature of civilized age and today.
