도시 삶과 공동체의 표현 과정으로서 커뮤니티 아트 = Life in the city and Community art as a process of representation

국문 초록 (Abstract)

최근 예술을 통한 도시재생이 주목받고 있다. 그러나 문화적 도시재생을 위한 공공예술 사업들은 거주민의 요구가 실질적으로 반영되지 않고 있으며, 예술가들의 창의성도 제한되어 있다. 거주민과 예술가들의 관계 맺기의 과정도 생략되기 일쑤여서 소통과 참여의 예술 활동은 기대하기 어렵다. 도시 공간의 예술 활동이 누구를 위한 공간실천이며 무엇을 위한 것인가 하는 문제는 문화적 도시재생에 참여하는 예술가들의 주요한 과제이다. 본고는 대도시의 예술이 실제 공간의 구체적 삶과 어떠한 관계를 맺고 있는가 하는 문제의식 속에서 공동체의 표현 과정으로서 예술을 고찰한다.
도시 공간의 의미를 재발견하려는 공간실천으로서의 예술 활동을 위해서 벤야민이 수행했던 도시와 예술의 사유를 고찰해보는 것이 필요하다. 벤야민의 미학은 역사적인 맥락 속의 이미지 발굴과 도시 사물들에 대한 공간적 성찰, 그러한 환경에 처한 현대인의 삶을 함께 살폈다. 벤야민은 기술과 자본이 만들어낸 도시 공간의 이미지들이 양가성을 지니고 있음을 간파했다. 우리가 꿈을 꾸고 깨어나는 순간의 자각으로서 소망이미지는 인간의 근원적 욕망 즉, 유토피아에 대한 태고적 이미지이며, 대도시인들의 관계맺음 속에서 소통하고 협력하면서 적극적인 표현으로 나타날 수 있다. 현재의 삶의 위기를 극복하려는 집단의 인식과 자각을 추동하는 상상의 이미지들은 공동체를 기반으로 한 예술 활동을 통해 창작될 수 있다.
도시 공간에서 벌어지는 예술 활동은 소망이미지의 출현을 이끄는 과정이 되어야 한다. 소외되었던 도시 거주민의 참여와 소통을 가능케 하는 커뮤니티 아트가 벌어질 때 과거 세대가 꿈꾸었던 이미지를 다음 세대가 의식적으로 기억해 내는 과정이 생겨난다. 이것은 벤야민이 지향했던 소망이미지의 현실화이고 예술의 사회적 기능이라 말할 수 있다.
소통하고 참여함으로써 의식과 감각 체험을 표현하게 도와주는 커뮤니티 아트의 공간성, 관계성, 과정성은 예술을 확장시키고 새로운 예술 활동의 의미를 열어줄 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Recently urban regeneration through art has come into the spotlight. In practice, Public art business for urban regeneration is not embracing the demand of the dwellers, also the creativity of the artists is limited. The process to establish a relationship between the dwellers and the artists is so prone to be left out that the dwellers" communicating and participating into the actual art activities is hard to be expected. Who are the art activities in urban space for? What is the spatial practice for? These are the primary tasks for the artists who participate in cultural urban regeneration.
It is necessary to consider the city that Benjamin practised for the artistic activities as spatial practice to rediscover the meaning of the space of cities and its artistic ground. His aesthetics appraises an image excavation in the context of the history, spatial reflection of the ojects in the cities, and modern human life living in these circumstances. Bejamin penetrated that the images of city space produced from technology and capital have ambivalence. Wish-images as awareness of the moment which we dream and awake, namely is the primordial image on Eutopia and it could be presented as an entusiastic expression cooperating and communicating in the relationship among people living in the large city.
Imaginary images which drive collective perceptions and self-awareness for overcoming the current crisis of life can be created through an artistic activity based on community. Such artistic activities within the urban areas should be a process for leading the advent of wish-images. When a `Community Art` which enables the participation and communication in abandoned urban residents takes in place such process would also be taken in place, where the images of the past generations would consciously be recalled by the next generations. This can be said that actualization of the hopeful image of Walter Benjamin"s pursuing goal and the social function of the art.
With `participation` and `communication` , a `Community Art` consisting of spatiality, relationship, and process for helping expression of experiences of consciousness and sense enables the art be extended and embraces the new era of artistic activities.
