한국 신문의 자살보도의 담론적 성격: 동아일보와 한겨레신문을 중심으로 = A Study on the Discourses of Korean Suicide Report: Fousing on Dong-A Ilbo and Hankyeore Shinmoon

For a long time, the suicide has been tabooed and recognized as a subject of prevention in most societies. But simultaneously it always has been a object of philosophical debate. The discourse regarding the suicide is complicated, but the suicide report seems to assume a specific form of reproducting the rulling discourse, that is, `suicide science` or suicidology which centers around psycho-pathology, psychology and socialogy etc. This study macroscopically explores characters of the discourse over suicide in korean newspapers. It conducted a content analysis of the 185 reports at The Hankyoreh Shinmoon and the Dong-A Ilbo. As a result, there are a lot of straight reports assuming that the suicide is a crime, emphasizing suicide motive and precaution. They have a strong tendency to regard the suicide not only as a social issue but also as a personal problem from the view of psycho-pathology and psychology. This tendency is stronger at the conservative newspaper, the Dong-A Ilbo than the progressive one, the Hankyoreh shinmoon. The philosophical viewpoint as a critical discourse was very rare and the socioeconomic view was relatively strong at The Hankyoreh shinmoon. According to the results, the korean press reports faithfully have reproducted the point of ruling discourse that regards a suicide as social ills and mental problems. Then, it is concluded that the press report on the suicide is the discourse of exclusion and discrimination which stipulates a suicidal act as the social deviance of problem individuals in the interest of social integration.
