Music education at actual school fields is basically aimed at the desirable musical growth of human beings. Desirable musical growth means that the musical ability and mind develop into a balanced and comprehensive state. Whether the purpose of musical ability development and the formation of a musical mind is able to be achieved depends upon the improvement or quality of individual student’s experiences of music. Furthermore, what and how students experience through school music lessons affects their musical growth. To achieve the goal, this research placed an emphasis on the area of music appreciation, which is the most accessible and the basis of all activities among the various learning areas performed in school music education. Through the following process, this study suggests teaching methods of Korean traditional music appreciation class in middle school focusing on Korean classical songs with the theme of "Love".
First of all, not only bibliographies such as 『The general conception of 「AkㆍYe」 in 『Ak-ki』』, 『An outline of music education』, 『The foundation of music education』, and 『The understanding of Gugak』, but the content system and achievement standards of 2015 revised curriculum of music education were analyzed.
Based on this, the importance of Gugak(Korean traditional music) education was recognized and the research studied ways of teaching Gugak appreciation class.
Secondly, among the many Gugak pieces in the current six middle school textbooks, the songs used in this study were selected one from 'Pansori', one from 'Jeongga', and one from 'Folk Songs', which are Korean traditional vocal genres, respectively. That is to say, 「Sarang-ga」(part of the Pansori <Chunhyang-ga>’, 「Woorak」(part of a female song)’ and 「Neoyeong Nayeong」(a piece of folk song)’ were selected as the songs for the study and organized into the contents of Gugak appreciation classes.
Thirdly, by exploring three stages of listening to music, this study devised a music appreciation learning model based on the “Type of Response” and suggested the actual teaching. The appreciation phase of a music listening class model consists of sensory, analytical, and aesthetic appreciation, and appropriate musical and artistic activities for each stage were presented in this study on how to guide students.
Gugak appreciation education based on the theme of “Love” leads to access to diverse and integrated musical subjects. In that way, it allows students to break away from a piece of class that only focuses on Western music or simply feeling perception, which is a method performed in most music classes.
In addition, this study will help facilitate effective music appreciation classes by organizing classes with active appreciation activities. Ultimately, these methods introduced in this study make it easier for students to access and become interested in Gugak.
Above all, through this research, students are expected to enjoy their own lives.
