A Study on the Operational Status of Vocal Education in Practical Music Academies in the Seoul Metropolitan Area
Advisor Professor Hyunseung Bang Major in Practical Music Hyunji Jang
This study aims to analyze the current operational status of vocal education in practical music academies located in the Seoul metropolitan area and to propose educational systems and improvement strategies that can effectively respond to changing learning demands. In recent years, public interest in vocal education has increased due to the popularization of broadcast audition programs and the expansion of online content consumption. Accordingly, learning purposes and demands have diversified, encompassing hobbies, content creation, vocal technique correction, and preparation for ceremonial performances such as wedding songs. In this context, the present study examines whether practical music academies are adequately accommodating these emerging learning needs, with a particular focus on the operational structure of vocal education.
To this end, qualitative and quantitative data were collected through in-depth interviews and surveys conducted with instructors and students at practical music academies in the metropolitan area. Based on analyses from the perspectives of academies, instructors, and students, the findings indicate that vocal education in practical music academies remains largely centered on entrance examination-oriented structures, thereby failing to sufficiently address the increasingly diverse learning demands.
The key issues identified are as follows.
First, problems related to the class grouping system
Second, issues concerning instructor assignment
Third, limitations in class time management
Fourth, challenges in the operation of major practical training and supplementary educational programs
Fifth, deficiencies in educational facilities, equipment, and cleanliness management.
Based on these issues, improvement strategies are proposed across three dimensions: the educational system, educational programs, and the educational environment. Specifically, the recommendations include:
First, the refinement of class groupings that reflect learners’ objectives and proficiency levels;
Second, instructor assignment based on professional expertise and the strengthening of instructional competencies;
Third, diversification of class time management and instructional formats;
Fourth, the reorganization of major practical training and the expansion of supplementary programs;
Fifth, systematic management of educational facilities, equipment, and cleanliness, along with demand-based space utilization.
The study confirms that improving the quality of vocal education in practical music academies requires a collaborative operational structure in which academies, instructors, and students share responsibilities and roles. Such cooperation is expected to enable vocal education in practical music academies to respond effectively to evolving societal demands and to develop in a sustainable manner.
