The purpose of this study was to find the effects of socio-dramatic play with flowers on young children's mathematic abilities.
For this purpose, the following the research questions were established:
1. The children who took part in socio-dramatic play with flowers may get higher scores on a classification test than the children who did not join it 2. The children who took part in socio-dramatic play with flowers may get higher scores on a order test than the children who did not join it.
3. The children who took part in socio-dramatic play with flowers may get higher scores on a measurement test than the children who did not join it.
4. The children who took part in socio-dramatic play with flowers may get higher scores on a mathematic-concept test than the children who did not join it.
5. The children who took part in socio-dramatic play with flowers may get higher scores on a space-concept test than the children who did not join it.
6. The children who took part in socio-dramatic play with flowers may get higher scores on a time-concept test than the children who did not join it.
In order to answer these questions the subjects were 40 five-year-old children from D kindergarten in Kuro-gu, Seoul. The subjects were divided into experimental(N=20) and control(N=20) groups. The experimental group which were consist of 20 children took part in socio-dramatic play with flowers.
The control group which were consist of 20 children did not participate it.
Experiment was executed over a period of 4 weeks. Using mathematic abilities measurement evaluated by Park, sang-sook(1999) which was based on School Readiness Test of mathematic by Korean Educational Development Institute (1988).
The collected data analyzed with t-test SPSS program was applied for the statistical processing.
The conclusions of this thesis are as followed:
First, there were statistically significant differences between the two groups on mathematic abilities. The scores of mathematic abilities test of experimental group were higher than control group. Out of the possible 7 points on classification ability test, experimental group received 6.85 points and control group received 3.95 points and out of the possible 5 points on order ability test, experimental group received 4.80 points and control group received 3.00 points. Also, out of the possible 7 points on mathematic-concept ability test, experimental group received 5.50 points and control group received 4.00 points.
Out of the possible 3 points on space-concept ability test, experimental group received 2.60 points and control group received 1.95 points. Out of the possible 5 points time-concept ability test, experimental group received 3.10 points and control group received 2.20 points.
However, there were no statistically significant differences between two groups on measurement ability test.
Second, during the children were getting in socio-dramatic play with flowers they had enrich communication skills such as various questions, answers, suggestions and descriptions.
