The purpose of this study is to explore the educational method needed for the elementary school children of multicultural families to write book reports and diaries in order to help the increasing number of children of multicultural families do their homework.
It was found that the children of multicultural families have more difficulties in reading and writing than speaking and hearing, and that they have poor academic performance and great difficulty with homework activities after entering school. This study attempts to present the educational method for writing, focusing on writing book reports and diaries with which they have particular difficulties among all homework activities. In order to write book reports and diaries well, it is important to learn the text structure of book reports and diaries. Texts have both contents and structure.
In order to write well, it is important for the students not only to have background knowledge but also to have basic knowledge of the structure. Knowledge about the text structure is used as a useful tool for learners in the course of understanding and producing writings, and this can be applied to instructing the children of multicultural families to write.
Accordingly, this thesis attempts to present the educational method for writing needed for the children of multicultural families by analyzing the book reports and diaries written by the children of ordinary families and the book reports and diaries written by the children of multicultural families. To achieve this, in Chapter 3, the text structure and contents of twenty samples from book reports and diaries written by ordinary family children and twenty samples from book reports and diaries written by multicultural family children were analyzed. Based on the results of the analysis, the direction of writing education needed for multicultural family children was presented, and in Chapter 4, a concrete educational method to write book reports and diaries was presented.
This study is meaningful in that the educational method for writing using text analysis research, which is insufficient in Korean language writing education, is presented. This study, however, has limitations in that its text analysis data were insufficient and the method for such education was not actually applied. In this study, the educational method was presented by selecting only book reports and diaries among the diverse homework activities of elementary school children, so diverse follow-up studies to help the children of multicultural families do their homework activities should continue to be done.
