In this paper, I will write the changing process of the social aspect through re-establishment of the chronological system of the earthenware excavated during Tamna period, Jeju island.
For this reason, I examined the relics of each layer, separated deposited of Jongdal-ri shellmound, In particular, on the basis of cross-chronology of the pottery of the Korea Peninsula, I set the stage on each layer. Then, I tried to understand society of Tamna period examining bibliographic data related historic background, associated with each phase.
Phase 1 refer to the time when Tamna Ⅰ layer has been deposited. Relics such as Samyang-dong style pottery, Triangular cross-section rim pottery, Gwakji-ri style pottery and gray soft earthenware were excavated. From the relics and information from the relics, depositional period of the first layer during Tamna period is estimated to be from 3 century to 5 middle of century.
In addition to the bibliographic data, relics during that period were found not only from Jeju, but also from the South part of korea. It indicates Tamna society traded with whole countries located in South Peninsula, not just limited with Mahan.
Phases 2 handles the time when Tamna Ⅱ layer was deposited. During this period, Gwakji-ri style pottery has been still excavated, and Jongdal-ri style pottery start excavated. And Short neck jar, technically developed and pottery estimated to be related with territorial expansion of Baekje around 5∼7 century were found in this layer. In addition, Because Long torso bottles, mostly excavated around Shilla Capital were found in this layer, depositional period of Tamna Ⅱ layer can be assumed from middle of 5 century to late of 7 century.
Phases 3 is from late of 7 century to early 9 century with a continuance line of phases 2. Reddish brown hard pottery, its finished pottery, Gonae-ri style pottery and Stamping pottery, typical relics from unified Shilla Capital were found together. When phases 3 was deposited, excent the early format pattern, it is considered to disappeared already. Athough Three Kingdoms were unified by Shilla, Tamna assumed to go with the current of times and at the same time, tried to be adapted depending on neighboring country’s attitude.
Also phases 4, the Reddish brown hard pottery started to disappear in this period because it was not found at all except several broken pieces. Initiatory period of this phase can be determined since the pottery produced from late Shilla Kingdom to early Koryo dinasty and Haemurikupwan celadon started. In this period, Koryo dominated its territory to Koryo, instead Tamna kept autonomy. soon it was annexed to Koryo.
Up to now, I tried to explain how the relics at the 5th point of Jongdal-ri shellmound changed depending on the layer and understand how Tamna society’ lifestyle at that period developed.
Although the archeological society of Jeju excavated researched lots of things and many researchers has been produced until now, only few of them are interested about Tamna period. That’s why no much progress have been made.
I hope this paper give a progress of archeological reserch of Tamna society.
