HaedongAkpu(海東樂府), written by Hju-ong(休翁) Shim Kwang-se(沈光世,l577-l624), is a kind of Akpupoetry(樂府詩) which is estimated to be the first work of writing with critical argument among the series of YongsaAkpu(詠史樂府) of Lee Dynasty. This study is to investigate the background of the period and the author's life, the motivation and the objective of the writing, characteristics of HaedongAkpu, and the literary view reflected in the original poems.
Speaking of the background of the period and the author's life, the period of Sonjo(宣祖)'s and Kwanghae-gun(光海君)'s reign was a period when struggle for political power was deepend internally as a result of the separation of East and West clique(東西朋黨), and when the whole country was devastated by the l592's Japanese Invasion(任辰倭亂). Academic background of that period is characterized as the golden period of Neo-Confucianism(性理學), with the mode of poetry in the course of changing from that of Song(宋)'s poetry to that of Tang(唐)'s poetry. At that period Shim Kwang-se was born a grandson of Shim Ui-gyum(沈義謙), who belonged to West clique, Passed the state examination, and served as Solso(說書), Yejo-jwarang(禮曺佐郞), Haewun-Pangwan(海運判官), and so on. However, in the reign of Kwanghae-gun, he was involved in the so called "Kim Je-nam(金悌男) Incident" being exiled to Kosong(固城), where he spent about ten years and wrote HaedongAkpu in l6l7, the fifth year of his exile life. Later he was reappointed by dint of Injo-deposition(仁祖反正) and died from a disease a year later.
Motivation of the writing of HaedongAkpu was, first, to express the spirit of independence aimed to enhance the status of the history of his own nation, sloughing off the Chinese view of the world and second, to head for the principle of recognizing the present clearly on the basis of the past.
Concerning the characteristics of HaedongAkpu, each of the forty-four pieces of the work consists of the form of "Sahwa(史話):original poem(原詩)'. It's form is characterized by the fact that the foot adopted much more ChabOn-style(雜言體) than CheOn-style(齊言體) and that the rhyme was rather free. Moreover, ethnical spirit was encouraged by the use of local poetic diction, and the use of conventional word facilitates the conversion of poetical imagination, and the timely adoption of long or short phrase well expresses the harmonious characteristic.
His literary view reflected in the original poems could be summarized as follows. First, he tried to express legitimate view of history through the independent sense of history independent of Chinese view of the world. Second, Shim Kwang-se emphasizes Confucian value of loyalty and filial piety, and stresses the reign of King through self-discipline. Especially he put great emphasis on integrity expressed in case of Chong Mong-ju(鄭夢周) or Won Chon-sok(元天錫), raising practical items of virtue. Thirdly, he encouraged sense of strenuous effort, for at that time the military power of the nation was weakened after the 1592's Japanese Invasion and so the independent national defense was most required. fourthly, Confucian sense of civilization was emphasized. Shim Kwang-se tried to expell Buddhism and in turn to have Confucian convention settled. Additionally, he rejected the Idea of Pungsudocham(風水圖讖思想), considering it as magic and confusing.
