Contemporary art museums have less general recognition of disabled people and changes in the educational environment compared to the fields of special education and are conducting separated education to distinguish between the disabled and the non-disabled. The purpose of this study is to discuss the necessity of museum education linked to integrated education and to explore the possibility of integrated education in art museum through the cases of art museum education using Howard Gardner's multiple intelligence theory.
The researcher studied educational programs at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Busan Museum of Art, and Seoul Art Space-Jamsil, and also researched and studied the Guggenheim Museum in the United States and visiting art museum workshop with the visually impaired in Japan.
< A certain sense > is a detailed education program of National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art to accommodate various types of disabled learners and non-disabled persons, and the program <Art Museum Outing> of Busan Museum of Art that provided an experience space at ordinary times derived participation of non-disabled people. And <Project A> of Seoul Art Space-Jamsil helped to improve the importance of the attitude of the educator in moving toward integrated education. Although education program in art museums for the disabled in Korea has a limit of separated education, in regard that these programs attempted to provide a number of learning methods besides the visual approach and to lead the participation of the non-disabled, the forms of early integrated education can be seen.
Through the program <The Touchy Subject : A Sensory Tour> in the Guggenheim Museum, the educators operated the education program as a facilitator so that the participants could interact with the objects of appreciation by touching, and <The Workshops Created by the Visually Disabled> built an appreciation of artwork in the atmosphere of free conversation that no one is excluded. Such overseas cases illustrate exemplary cases of education program in art museum that linked to integrated education based on the recognition of advanced disabled people.
If we establish the basis of recognition to consider disability as a universal issue that can be overcome from the social level, we are able to move on toward education that discursive communication about art regardless of with or without disability in the museum. I expect that this research will contribute to the internal capacity of education for the disabled in art museum, and furthermore, hope to promote social integration to realize the value of community within cultural context by resolving the inequality of the cultural disadvantaged people including the disabled people.
