Formation and development of new media are rapidly taking place in the modern society, and opportunities for acquiring information using the internet for the younger generation is increasing.
When changes in domestic newspaper formats are observed, it can be seen that “compacting” as a part of efforts in recovering perusal rate and strengthening the identity of their newspaper is becoming the most significant logic in the global newspaper market.
Major newspapers of the US and of England were focusing on their layout format to the point that they can easily identified at vendors even when the title is hidden, but Korean newspapers use similar “large” formats, making it difficult to identify them when their title is hidden. As a result, the Joong Ang Daily had planned to change its format to the Berliner format.
Based on these points, this study aims to determine the readers’ attitude toward daily newspaper press format as well as ad positions. Based on various documents, in order to observe the influences of newspaper press format and ad position on ad notice, attractiveness, preference, ad preference, and overall paper preference, the following questions were established.
Question 1: What are the differences in ad notice based on the newspaper press format?
Question 2: How is the ad preference based on the newspaper press format?
Question 3: What are the differences in ad attractiveness based on the newspaper press format?
Question 4: How is the overall paper preference based on the newspaper press format?
Question 5: What are the differences in overall paper preference based on newspaper press format?
In order to assess the above study questions, samples with varying newspaper press format and ad positions were produced; and a survey was conducted with a total of 320 surveys collected. Among them, 299 of valid surveys were analyzed.
The results of the study are as follows.
First, in questions 1, 2, 3 pertaining to ad notice, preference, and attractiveness by newspaper press format, all were found to be higher in the Berliner format than in the large format.
Second, also in the study questions pertaining to overall paper preference and paper attractiveness, both were found to be higher in the Berliner format than in the large format.
Conclusively, when all study results are integrated, attitudes in ad notice, preference, and attractiveness in Berliner format were found to be more favorable than in the large format. Also, it was verified that preference and attractiveness improved for the overall paper. This shows consistencies in both domestic and international cases, and it can be interpreted that attitude toward advertisements and overall press type improves as the newspaper press format becomes smaller.
