Social services in terms of special education sometimes experience the chaos due to the lack of its insufficient study. This project especially concenteates on therapy service and studies its status at the moment, and analyzes demands from parents. The main object of this project is to provide fundamental data in order to set an effective policy of therapy service.
This project is divided into three main problems.
First, The present situation of therapy service, such as how does it works, time/expense of service and voucher system.
Second, Assessment of present policies from department of education such as afterschool support, and the level of satisfaction.
Third, The different kind of therapy services from different organizations and the level of satisfaction.
The target of this research was a parent of children, who has been provided of therapy service. The questionnaire was divided into three main parts (then divide into subtitle); the present situation of therapy service, the level of satisfaction, and different kind of therapy services from different organizations and the level of satisfaction.
This research was performed in district C and D; three special education schools (mental retardation, emotional disturbance and crippled disorder) and each school from kindergarten, primary, middle and high school. 105 out of 120(87.5%) of questionnaires were returned and 7 of questionnaires were eliminated for research due to lack of answer. Therefore, in this project 98 of questionnaires were considered.
An outcome of this research for each part is as follows.
First, The present situation of therapy service, such as how does it works, time/expense of service and voucher system:
The most proportion of therapy service was provided individually. The majority of children having therapy service below 5 hours/week and the highest expense on it were 300,000 won/month. More than half of children were using the voucher system in order to receive a therapy service. Most of decision about choosing the method of therapy service was made by parent or discussion with consultant.
Second, Assessment of present policies from department of education such as afterschool support, and the level of satisfaction:
The level satisfaction on after-school support is moderate. The level of satisfaction on present therapy service policies from department of education is moderate.
Third, The different kind of therapy services from different organizations and the level of satisfaction:
In the private organization, most of service is speech therapy and number of sense·motor·perception training and psychology·behavior·adjustment training also provided. The level of satisfaction on therapy services from private organization is satisfactory or moderate. Similarly, special education support center mostly provides speech therapy, also provides number of sense·motor·perception training and psychology·behavior·adjustment training. The level of satisfaction from special education support center is satisfactory or moderate. Finally, in the special school, most of services are speech therapy and number of sense·motor·perception training and self-care training also provided. The level of satisfaction from special school is satisfactory or moderate.
As it is mentioned before this project can be used/studied as a guideline to set new policies on therapy service/special education. However, it restricts the accuracy of research, as it is limited in specific area.
Moreover, this project more concentrates on providing the fundamental data of therapy services rather than finding a specific differences from each level of disabilities. Therefore, in the future project, it is suggested that research the special needs of therapy services from different level/area of disabilities.
