Johann Sebastian Bach was a musician in the Baroque age. He composed more than thousand pieces in every style except for Opera. He sublimated standardized musical form of France, Italy and Germany by standardization of their patterns and musical aspects.
He composed 8 pieces for flute; 1 partita for solo flute, 4 sonatas for harpsichord and flute and 3 sonatas for basso continuo and flute.
In this thesis, Partita in a minor for solo flute BWV 1013 which is the only flute solo among Bach's flute pieces will be discussed. And it is composed of four movements, Allemande-Corrente -Serabande-Bourree Angliase.
The term, Partita, was used for the meaning of the variation in the 17th and 18th century. But the meaning was changed to the suite as time went by. The Partita represented one of the most important style in the Baroque and it became as a standard form in the age of J.S.Bach.
It is believed that Partita in a minor for solo flute BWV 1013 was composed in Cothen era(1717-1720) which is known as the period of his creativity.
It was difficult to play since this piece does not indicate tempo, dynamic, and articulation like other musics of J.S.Bach.
Thus, the purpose of this thesis is to analyze the music in detail to understand Flute Partita and help players to play it appropriately.
Firstly, it is required to understand the historical background of J.S.Bach, his life and the main musical aspects. Secondly, the general meaning of Partita and J.S.Bach's Partita will be discussed and compared.
Analysis shall be conducted in the aspects of form, component, rhythm and harmony of Partita in a minor for solo flute BWV 1013.
